Torenia fournieri Care Guide: Cultivate Your Own Blooming Haven

Torenia fournieri is a low-growing perennial plant in the Scrophulariaceae family. It is native to tropical Asia and African woodlands. The stems of Torenia fournieri are slender and quadrangular in shape.

The flowers resemble those of snapdragons and violets, and they are borne in axillary or terminal racemes. The flowers come in a wide range of colors and are known for their tolerance to high temperatures and heat.

It got its name because its blooming period in summer and lip-shaped flowers resemble Dongcai (a type of vegetable).

Torenia fournieri is also known as Blue Butterfly, Flower Melon, Flower Gong, Blue Pig’s Ears (due to the large blue-purple patches on the petals resembling the ears of a pig), and Blue Moon.

It is an important ornamental plant in high-temperature regions during the summer and autumn seasons.

I. Morphological Characteristics

Torenia fournieri is a low-growing perennial plant with a compact and neat growth habit, reaching a height of about 15cm to 30cm. The entire plant is smooth and without thorns.

The stems are slender and quadrangular, and the plant naturally branches out and grows upright. The leaves are opposite, measuring approximately 3cm to 5cm in length.

They are ovate or ovate-heart-shaped with a pointed tip and finely serrated margins. There are no stipules.

The flowers of Torenia fournieri resemble those of snapdragons and violets, often leading to confusion. However, the distinct color patterns on its petals set it apart from snapdragons. The throat of the petals has yellow spots, making it eye-catching and adorable.

The flowers are borne in axillary or terminal racemes. The peduncle of the inflorescence is slightly longer than the leaves. The calyx is slightly swollen and has broad wings, measuring about 1.5cm in length, with soft hairs along the edges.

The original species of Torenia fournieri has a blue-purple corolla tube, a blue-purple or purple-red upper lip with inconspicuous 2 lobes, and a blue-purple or purple-red lower lip with 3 lobes, with a yellow spot on the middle lobe.

The flowers come in a wide range of colors, including white, pink, peach, purple-red, purple-blue, deep purple, blue, as well as various bicolors and mixed colors.

II. Growing Environment

Torenia fournieri prefers high temperatures and can tolerate heat. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and is not very demanding on soil requirements.

It grows vigorously and flowers abundantly in well-drained, moderately fertile, and moist soil with sufficient sunlight.

It is found in woodlands, valleys, and along roadsides.

Propagation Methods

In Taiwan, southern China, and tropical regions, Torenia fournieri can be sown throughout the year, but spring sowing is preferred. It takes about 12 to 13 weeks from sowing to flowering. The germination temperature requirement is 22°C to 24°C.

If sowing in autumn or winter, it should be protected from the cold. The seeds are very small, so they can be mixed with fine soil when sowing, and no soil should be covered on top of the seeds.

This is because Torenia fournieri seeds require a certain amount of light for germination while keeping the soil moist. Covering with a thin film (or using a glass cover for pot sowing) is recommended.

Germination usually occurs within 1 to 2 weeks. After germination, remove the film and place the seedlings in a well-lit and well-ventilated area.

Fertilize lightly during the seedling stage. The growth of seedlings is slow initially, but it accelerates after reaching a height of 5cm.
