Passiflora caerulea: The Enchanting Climbing Vine You Need to Know

The Passiflora caerulea is a perennial evergreen climbing vine. Its stem is cylindrical with edges and hairless; its leaves are paper-thin, heart-shaped, and hairless; its flowers are umbrella-shaped and large, in a pale green color; its fruit is nearly spherical, turning orange or yellow when ripe; and its seeds are numerous and heart-shaped, flowering between May and July.

Originally native to the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, the Passion Flower is now widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions, and sometimes found in slightly higher-altitude valley jungles.

It thrives in a humid and warm climate and is not strictly demanding on soil quality. However, it grows best in sunny gardens with soil rich in organic matter, loose, deep-layered, well-drained.

Propagation methods mainly include cutting and seeding, with cutting being the most common.

I. Physical Features

Passiflora caerulea

This herbaceous vine has a cylindrical stem with slight edges, is hairless, and slightly powdered white; leaves are paper-thin, measuring 5-7cm in length and 6-8cm in width, with a heart-shaped base, deeply lobed with 5 parts, the middle lobe is ovate and long, the side lobes are slightly smaller, hairless and having an entire margin.

Leaf stalk is 2-3cm long, with 2-4(-6) tiny glandular bodies in the middle; stipules are large, kidney-shaped, clasping the stem, and can reach up to 1.2 cm long with wavy edges.

The inflorescence has been reduced to only one flower that is opposite to the tendril. The flower is large, pale green, with a large diameter of 6-8(-10) cm; the flower stalk is 3-4cm long; the sepals are wide-ovate, 3cm long, entire, with the outside being pale green and the inside greenish-white, the outside tip has a horn-like appendage.

The 5 petals are pale green and almost the same length as the sepals; the outer corona has 3 rounds of filamentous segments, the outer and middle segments are 1-1.5cm long, the top is sky blue, the middle white, and the lower part purplish-red, the inner segments are filamentous, 1-2mm long, the top has a purplish-red capitulum, and the lower part is pale green.

Passiflora caerulea

The inner corona is tassel-like, segments are purplish-red, with a dense glandular ring below; there is a flower disk, about 1-2mm high; the androgynophore is 8-10mm long; there are 5 stamens, the filaments are separated, about 1cm long and flat.

The anthers are oblong, about 1.3cm long; the ovary is ovate-globose; there are 3 styles, separated, purplish-red, about 1.6cm long; the stigmas are kidney-shaped.

The fruit is ovate-globose to nearly spherical, about 6cm long, turning orange or yellow when ripe; there are numerous seeds, heart-shaped, about 5mm long. The flowering period is from May to July.

Passion Fruit

The passion fruit has five sepals, each 3-4.5 cm long, pale green on the outside and greenish-white on the inside, with a horn-like appendage at the tip. The five petals are pale green and nearly equal in length to the sepals.

The outer corolla has three rows of filamentous segments, with the outer and middle segments reaching 1-1.5 cm in length.

The tips are sky blue, the middle is white, and the lower part is purple-red. The inner segments are filamentous, 1-2 mm long, with a purple-red head at the tip and a pale green lower part. The inner corolla is tassel-like, with purple-red segments, below which lies a dense ring of glands.

Egg Fruit

The egg fruit has lanceolate sepals, each 3-4.5 cm long. The petals are elliptical and nearly equal in length to the sepals.

The corolla has three rows of filamentous segments, with the outer and middle rows measuring 1-1.5 cm and the inner row 1-2 mm. The inner corolla segments are tassel-like and purple-red.

III. Habitat and Origin

Passiflora caerulea

Native to South America, these plants are commonly cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Passion fruits are tropical and subtropical fruits that prefer sunlight, south-facing slopes, and warm climates.

They are highly adaptable and not particular about soil, thriving in front yards, back yards, mountains, and roadside areas.

However, they grow best in sunny gardens with organic-rich, loose, deep, well-drained soil. They dislike waterlogging and drought, so soil should be kept moist.

IV. Propagation Methods

Passiflora caerulea

Passion fruit can be propagated by seeds, layering, and cuttings. As the fruits contain many seeds and have a high germination rate, seed propagation is commonly used in production.

Seeds

Seed propagation can be carried out throughout the year, but spring and autumn are the best seasons. Seeds are typically harvested from healthy, disease-free, high-yielding plants. Fruits should be symmetrical, slightly heavy, and fully mature.

After removing the seeds and washing off any residue, they can be dried and sown. Approximately 10-20 grams of carbendazim per kilogram of seeds should be mixed and sown on a nursery bed, covered with a thin layer of straw, and watered thoroughly.

After sowing, water should be applied according to weather conditions. In sunny weather, water should be sprayed once in the morning and evening, and about half a month later, the seeds start to sprout.

Once 80% or more of the seeds have sprouted, timely top dressing should be applied, such as dilute water fertilizer or urea solution, to grow strong seedlings. The seedlings can be transplanted once they have grown four true leaves.

Layering

Layering is a method of asexual propagation that is best carried out in spring, from February to March. This method involves pressing a branch from the parent plant into the soil or wrapping it with mud to form adventitious roots.

Then, the branch is separated from the parent plant above the adventitious roots, forming a new independent plant.

To interrupt downward transport of organic materials such as sugars, auxins, and other substances from leaves and branch tips, and to accumulate these substances in the upper treatment area for use during root formation, ring peeling can be done.

This method is simple, promotes rapid growth, and results in short seedling formation time.

Cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is another method. The best time for cuttings is spring, between February and March, but autumn cuttings are also possible. Select strong, mature one-year-old vines as cutting material.

Cut the vines into pieces with 2-3 nodes, each about 10-15 cm long. The lower cut should be 1 cm below a node, and the upper cut should be 3 cm from a node, with one full leaf on the cutting.

After preparing the cuttings, soak them in a 25 mg/kg water solution of ABT rooting powder for 30 minutes, then plant them in nutrient bags (8 cm in diameter and 12 cm high). The best nutrient soil is 50% fine loam and 50% humus.

The cuttings should be inserted to a depth of two-thirds of their length. After planting, place the nutrient bags on a nursery bed and water immediately.

The first watering must be thorough, and thereafter, water according to weather conditions to maintain moisture. The nursery bed should be 1.0-1.2 meters wide, with the length depending on the terrain.

Use bamboo strips to build an arched frame and cover it with a 50% shading net. After 30 days, the survival rate can reach 85% or more. From cuttings to planting out takes about 3-4 months.

V. Cultivation Techniques

Garden Construction

Deep plowing and thorough cultivation

Plant Passion Fruit, ensuring ample planting width, large holes, sufficient topsoil, extensive root zones, and appropriately high frames and density. The planting belt should be more than 1.1 meters wide, inclined 5 to 8 degrees inward with an inner wall inclined more than 70 degrees.

The planting belt and inner wall should be smooth and neat. The outer edge of the planting belt should form a 20 cm x 30 cm mound. The planting distance should be 3 meters x 4 meters, with a hole width of 60 cm, bottom width, and depth of 40 cm.

The topsoil should be fertile and ample, facilitating backfilling and root circle maintenance. The root circle soil should be 20 cm high and more than 70 cm in diameter.

The climbing frame height should be 2.2 meters on the windward slope and 2.5 meters on the leeward slope.

Pile Planting and Frame Building

Common Types:

Single-wall hedge frame, which involves stretching one or two wires on a row of upright pillars, each pillar being about 2 meters high and 6 meters apart, and two plants can be planted in between.

T-type hedge frame, similar to the single-wall hedge frame, but each pillar has a cross arm at the top, with two wires stretched at both ends of the arm.

Frame Material:

Mainly cement piles with iron or aluminum wire, but wooden sticks or bamboo poles can also be used.

Planting Frame Distance and Quantity:

The spacing of the cement poles is 4 meters, in line with the direction of the passion fruit plant row, using 56 poles per acre.

The cement pole is 220 cm long, planted 40-50 cm deep into the ground, with an above-ground height of 180 cm, and two layers of lead wire or iron wire, the first layer being 100 cm high.

Seedling Planting

Both bare-root seedlings and bagged seedlings can be used. Bare-root seedlings are easy to transport and have a low cost, but survival rates are low.

Bagged seedlings recover quickly after planting, which is beneficial for drought-tolerant planting, but they are more expensive.

During breeding, seeds are soaked in water for 2 to 3 days, the outer layer of the seed is rubbed off by hand, and each kilogram of seed is mixed with 10 to 15 grams of carbendazim or metalaxyl.

After mixing the seeds for 20 to 30 hours, they can be sown. The seedbed should maintain 40% to 50% shade.

After sowing, water is irrigated every 3 days, the shade shed is ventilated for one day, the seeds germinate 7 to 10 days later, and some emerge from the soil, remove the cover grass and plastic film fence.

Planting Time

Spring, summer, and autumn are all suitable seasons for planting, with spring and autumn being the best.

Planting Method

The upright fence method is the main method, and the pergola method can be used for garden cultivation.

Planting Density

For large-scale cultivation, the planting distance is 3 x 2 meters. Plant 111 plants per acre.

Precautions

When planting seedlings, prune old leaves appropriately, and remove the nutrition bag, do not bury it in the soil. When settling seedlings, mix a proper amount of mature organic fertilizer with sandy loam soil to make planting soil or covering soil.

When planting, straighten out the root system, fill the soil in layers, and tamp it down. After planting, water the roots in time. For newly dug planting holes, the neck of the seedling roots should be slightly higher than the ground level by 8-10 cm when planting.

After planting, arrange the tree pan and cover a small piece of film measuring 50 x 50 cm.

Maintenance Management

In fruit tree orchards, it’s advisable to interplant short-stalked crops such as peas, strawberries, potatoes, white elephant yams, and vegetables to fully utilize land and light-heat resources, thereby increasing yield and overall benefits per unit area.

Young Tree Care

After seedlings resume growth, buds should be wiped every five days to promote quick and robust growth of the main vine.

Pruning of the orchard should be completed by the end of February each year, removing diseased branches and those that have borne fruit; drainage ditches should be dug before the rainy season, roots should be trimmed to prevent water accumulation.

During the heavy flowering period from late June to early July, spray leaves with a 250-fold solution of monopotassium phosphate to promote flowering; during the heavy fruiting period in late July, spray leaves with a 6000-fold solution of “Cloud Large-120” and 0.2% borax to protect the fruit.

Root fertilization can also be used to promote flowering and fruit preservation. Before the dry season, deep plow the soil in the planting strip once, cut down the weeds in the protection strip and cover the planting strip to maintain temperature, humidity, and increase soil organic matter content.

Shaping and Pruning

When young trees grow to 40-50 cm, stakes should be set up in a timely manner and the young tree vines should be guided onto the rack. The main method for young trees is to use a single main vine with two layers of four main branches.

When the main vine grows to 70-80 cm, leave two side vines and guide them onto the rack to form the first layer of the main vine.

When the plant grows to 150-160 cm, leave another strong side branch and extend the main vine to form the second layer of the main branches, guiding them in opposite directions on the rack, forming a two-layer four-branch vine shape.

During this period, all side branches and sprouts below 80 cm and between 80-160 cm on the main vine should be pruned or wiped off.

Shaping

Single Vine Shaping: Leave one main vine per plant. When the main vine reaches the wire, let it grow with the wind, then leave one side vine to grow in the opposite direction;

Double Vine Shaping: Leave two main vines per plant. After the main vines reach the wire, guide them to grow in two different directions.

Pruning

Prune after picking fruit, cut to the secondary main vine or above. Avoid heavy pruning during dormant or slow growth periods. Yellow fruit varieties should be pruned from December to February, and purple fruit varieties from August to September.

When the branches and vines cover the rack, remove internal leaves and non-fruiting old branches, and retract drooping branches to 15 cm above the ground.

Heavy pruning can be done on old and diseased trees, with all secondary branches cut short at 20 cm from the main vine to stimulate new shoot formation.

Artificial Pollination

Yellow fruit varieties require artificial pollination, and purple fruit varieties can increase yield through artificial pollination. The method is to collect anthers when the flower just opens, then use a brush to apply pollen on the stigmas.

Fertilizer and Water Management

When planting passion fruit, base fertilizer should be applied in combination with pit planting. Apply 10-15 kg of mature farmyard manure per pit, then plant after backfilling the pit soil.

After fruit picking each year, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied in combination with pruning and weeding, with 8-10 kg of mature organic fertilizer applied per plant.

Passion fruit top dressing is generally carried out after the plants are established, once a month, first dilute then concentrated, it’s best to use dilute manure.

After planting, water and drain on time according to the weather and seedling condition, and apply light fertilizer or foliar fertilizer 2-3 times. Foliar fertilizer can be sprayed with a 400-fold solution of Mao Bifeng.

After the plant is on the rack, organic fertilizer mainly composed of human feces and urine and compound fertilizer can generally be applied before new shoot growth, during the peak flowering period, and during the peak fruiting period.

Fertilizer should be evenly applied in a ring trench dug 30-40 cm from the base of the plant and covered with soil to avoid root damage.

Passion fruit is sensitive to nitrogen fertilizer, excessive use before flowering can lead to excessive growth, so it’s appropriate to apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.

Irrigation

The water requirements of passion fruit are strict, it fears both waterlogging and drought, lack of water during flowering and fruiting can lead to small fruit, decreased quality and fruit drop.

Therefore, in the rainy season, drainage should be paid attention to, and watering should be timely during drought. Normally, the soil should not be white, and during the flowering and fruit setting period, the soil moisture content should be close to the maximum field capacity, but not waterlogged.

Sprinkling or drip irrigation is best. Shallow grass should be grown between rows or ground film should be covered to maintain soil moisture. It should not be intercropped with cucurbit crops to avoid virus infection.

Fruit Harvesting

Blooming

The Passiflora flower buds differentiate within the year, sprouting and differentiating simultaneously, taking only about 30 days from bud differentiation to blooming.

The cuttings of the new seedlings planted in the same year can bloom by June, and a small amount of fruit can be put on the market by August. The second year marks the formal fruiting period, with multiple blooms occurring from March to November.

On the flowering branches, each node can form a flower, with four to six normal flowers continuously forming in production.

After that, a normally developed flower can form every two to three nodes. It takes 18-20 days from bud formation to blooming, usually blooming between 10-11 AM.

Fruiting

The time required for the fruit to mature varies with the blooming season. Flowers that bloom in May-June mature 50-60 days after blooming, those that bloom in August-September need 70-90 days to mature, while those that bloom after October need 100-120 days to mature.

The fruit has a high rate of self-pollination. Mature fruits can be harvested from mid-June to early February of the following year, with the most concentrated harvesting periods in early July and late October.

The fruit is nearly spherical or egg-shaped, with an average longitudinal diameter of 6.4 cm, a transverse diameter of 5.8 cm, a fruit shape index of 1.1, and an average individual fruit weight of 65g.

The immature fruit is green, the mature fruit has a purple-red skin, the skin thickness is 0.3-0.6 cm, slightly hard; the flesh (false seed skin) is orange-yellow, with low acidity, a strong aroma, and good taste.

It can be eaten fresh or processed into juice, with a juice content of about 28%, and a soluble solid content of 15%-16%. The seeds are small and numerous, black in color. The fruit will naturally fall off when ripe, and it is resistant to storage and transport.

VI. Pest and Disease Control

The main pests and diseases of Passiflora include root rot, anthracnose, mosaic disease, fruit borers, termites, red spiders, and aphids. Prevention should be the main strategy, with timely pruning and leaf thinning to ensure ventilation and light, and good drainage can reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.

Diseases

Root Rot

Prevention method: Spray with 800-1000 times diluted solution of 70% Topsin.

Anthracnose

Prevention method: Use 500 times diluted solution of 50% Polyram or 400 times diluted solution of 40% Metalaxyl for prevention.

Mosaic Disease

Affected leaves show mosaic patterns, with light yellow spots, wrinkled leaves, shrunk and deformed fruit, thickened and hardened fruit skin, little to no flesh, spread by aphids, and more prevalent in cold, dry seasons.

Prevention method: Cultivate virus-free seedlings; eliminate aphid vectors, remove diseased leaves and plants; strengthen cultivation management to improve plant resistance; do not plant cucurbits or Solanaceae vegetables near the orchard.

Pest Control

Fruit Borer

Prevention method: Around 8 o’clock in the morning, spray a solution of 90% decamethrin diluted 1000 times (or 1500 times for phorate) plus 3% brown sugar every 4-5 days, repeating 3-4 times.

Alternatively, hang 5-6 lantern-style insect traps per acre, with a cotton ball in each trap treated with attractant (2ml added every 20 days) and another with phorate (refilled every 10 days).

This should be done after the fruit trees have flowered and before the fruit begins to enlarge, with regular cleaning of dead insects.

Termites

Prevention method: Spread termite medicine around the root. After planting in the orchard, place 1 to 2 stink balls about one foot away from the trunk of each tree to ward off termites.

Red Spider Mites

Prevention method: Spray evenly with a solution of 4000-5000 times acaricide (100ml per 800-1000 jin of water), a 1000-1500 times solution of 40% Chlorfenapyr EC, a 2000 times solution of 20% Miticide WP, or a 2000 times solution of 15% Dicofol EC, or a 6000-8000 times solution of 1.8% Qi Mite Essence EC. All can achieve ideal pest control results.

Aphids

Prevention method: Spray with a mixture of 25% aphid mite clear emulsion (50ml), 1500-2000 times solution of imidacloprid products, 60-70g of 10% Aphid Net, a 2500 times solution of 20% imidacloprid, or a 3000 times solution of 25% anti-aphid.

Coffee Borer Beetle

Boring into branches, causing all branches and fruits above the pest entry point to gradually die.

Prevention method: Regular inspection is necessary. When an entry point and droppings are found, inject 100 times of phorate or oxidized lecithin using a syringe and then seal the entry point with cotton and sticky yellow mud to kill the pest.

Other Pests

Newly opened orchards in some areas may be plagued by termites, scarabs, fruit flies and other insects. Some areas may also have scale insects. Pay attention to inspection and timely prevention.

The above pests can be controlled by spraying with a 500-1000 times solution of 45% or 50% malathion EC, or a 250-400 times solution of 50% chlorpyrifos EC. Note that scarabs are active and eat leaves in the evening, so it is better to spray in the evening.

Also, the scarab larvae, known as grubs, damage the roots of passion fruit underground, and should be removed promptly if found during loosening and fertilizing.

It’s worth noting that chlorpyrifos should not be used during the flowering and fruiting period to avoid pesticide poisoning in humans and animals.

VII. Main Value

Edible

According to expert analysis and testing, passion fruit contains rich protein, fat, reducing sugar, multiple vitamins, phosphorus, calcium, iron, potassium and up to 165 compounds, as well as 17 essential amino acids required by the human body.

Its nutritional value is very high, with a vitamin content of 1345 (1·U/100G), which is an effective anti-cancer ingredient, and a niacin content of 1.7mg/100G, which is good for preventing cardiovascular diseases.

Mature passion fruit has a fragrant aroma, and when cut open, the fragrance is overwhelming and refreshing, with plenty of pulp and juice inside. The sweet and sour taste is thirst-quenching and rejuvenating.

It is particularly suitable for processing into juice, dew, jam, jelly and other products with unique flavor, rich nutrition, health benefits, and aiding digestion.

The seeds of passion fruit have a high oil content of 21.7%-25.25%, the quality of which is comparable to sunflower oil, making it a high-quality edible oil.
