The Allure of Nicotiana alata: Colors, Care, and More

Nicotiana alata, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Solanaceae family. The entire plant is covered in sticky hairs.

Its leaves are spade-shaped or rectangular at the lower part of the stem, slightly embracing the stem or having winged stalks, and become ovate or ovate-rectangular upward, almost stalkless or with ears at the base, and lanceolate near the inflorescence.

The inflorescence is a false umbel, with a few scattered flowers. The calyx is cup-shaped or bell-shaped, with awl-shaped lobes, and the corolla is light green. The capsule is ovate, and the seeds are grayish-brown. The flowering period is in the spring.

The flowering tobacco is native to Argentina and Brazil. It prefers a warm, sunlit environment and fertile, loose soil. It is drought-resistant, but not cold-resistant.

I. Morphological Characteristics

Nicotiana alata

This is a limited perennial herb growing between 0.6 to 1.5 meters, with the entire plant covered in sticky hair.

The leaves at the base of the stem are shovel-shaped or rectangular, with a slightly stem-clasping base or winged stalk, developing into an ovate or ovate-rectangle shape as they move upwards, virtually stemless or with an eared base, becoming lanceolate near the inflorescence.

The inflorescence is pseudo-racemose, loosely bearing a few flowers; the pedicels are 5-20 millimeters long. The calyx is cup-shaped or bell-shaped, 15-25 millimeters long, with diamond-shaped needle-like lobes of unequal length.

The corolla is pale green, with a tube 5-10 centimeters long, a tube diameter of approximately 3-4 millimeters, throat diameter around 6-8 millimeters, and a limb width of 15-25 millimeters.

The lobes are ovate, short-pointed, with two longer than the other three; the stamens are of unequal length, with one shorter than the others. The capsule is ovoid, 12-17 millimeters long, and the seeds are approximately 0.7 millimeters long, greyish-brown.

II. Habitat and Origin

The genus Nicotiana has about 95 species, of which three are cultivated in China. Originally from Argentina and Brazil. It prefers a warm, sunny environment and fertile, loose soil. It is drought-resistant but not cold-resistant.

The optimal growing temperature is between 15-26℃. It thrives best in sandy loam soil rich in organic matter and requires good drainage. Poor drainage can easily lead to root rot.

It needs adequate sunlight, as insufficient sunshine can lead to leggy growth, sparse flowering, and pale, unattractive colors.

III. Propagation Methods

Nicotiana seeds are quite small, with about 11,500 seeds per gram. Producers in China generally use pelletized seeds. For the seedling substrate, it is recommended to use imported peat moss with good moisture retention and breathability, and a pH value of 5.5-5.8.

The substrate must be saturated with moisture before sowing. The seedling cultivation can be divided into four stages based on growth:

First stage: The radicle germination stage, from sowing to when the root grows to 0.6 cm and the cotyledons begin to grow.

The soil temperature should be maintained at 24-26℃, and the substrate should be moderately moist, even and consistent but not saturated. Drying is not allowed at any time during this stage.

Seeds should not be covered after sowing. Light exposure of 1100-4300 lux helps Nicotiana seed germination. Using large cell trays is beneficial for root development.

Under optimal conditions, the young roots appear in 3-5 days. At the end of this stage, the radicle has elongated and the root system is forming.

Second stage: The emergence of the stem and cotyledons, from the end of the first stage to when the root grows to 1.2-1.4 cm and the cotyledons emerge. The soil temperature should be reduced to 20-24℃, and light exposure should be adjusted to 5400-13000 lux.

Once the cotyledons unfold, apply 50-75 ppm of 14-0-14 slow-release fertilizer weekly. After the seedling roots penetrate the substrate, allow the soil to dry out but avoid excessive dryness, otherwise, the seedlings will cease to grow. This stage generally lasts for 7-10 days.

Third stage: The root system extends deeply into the cell tray, reaching 2.5 cm, and 2-3 true leaves appear. The focus of this stage should be on watering and fertilizing management to promote the development of the Nicotiana root system.

Implement a dry-wet cycle every 24 hours, increase the concentration of fertilizers, typically applying 100-150 ppm nitrogen fertilizer once a week. Use 20-10-20 and 14-0-14 fertilizers alternately.

The soil temperature can be gradually reduced to 18-21℃, and the light exposure should be maintained at 13000-16000 lux. B9 can be used to control the plant type. This stage typically lasts for 4-6 weeks in a 200-cell tray.

Fourth stage: In the later part of this stage, the developed root system occupies the entire cell hole, and the flower stem should have 3-4 leaves. The focus of this stage is still on watering and fertilizing management.

The soil temperature must be maintained at 16-17℃, and light exposure can be increased to 16000-38000 lux. Fertilizing is the same as the third stage, but in the later stage, watering and fertilizing should be reduced 7-10 days before potting to properly harden off the seedlings.

IV. Cultivation Techniques

Nicotiana plants should be potted promptly to avoid serious root entanglement and plant aging. To ensure smooth growth, the substrate should be permeable to water and air and should retain nutrients.

The soil pH value should be between 5.5 and 5.8. In production, a mixed substrate with a pH of 6.0 can be used. The soil temperature during this stage is very important.

For newly transplanted seedlings, the daytime temperature should be 18-21℃, and the nighttime temperature should be 16-18℃. Too low a temperature can cause seedling blanching, and a sharp rise can cause leaf scorch, leading to the death of some seedlings.

The first watering after transplanting must be thorough, or it will affect the seedling survival rate and the neatness of the later potted plant growth.

The seedling stage of Nicotiana is crucial, and its later growth is also very important. The growth period can be simply divided into two stages:

The first stage is the vegetative growth stage. This stage is mainly the vigorous branching period and formation period of the Nicotiana plant. The quality of the conditions directly affects later growth.

Keep the substrate moist but not wet to promote normal root growth. This stage requires a lot of fertilizer. To promote its vegetative growth, alternate watering and fertilizing with 20-10-20 and 15-0-15 slow-release fertilizers at 150-200ppm.

Adequate fertilizer supply and light conditions are key at this stage. Under good conditions, the vegetative body is fully formed in 20-25 days, and a small number of flowers have formed but have not yet achieved the desired effect.

The second stage is the reproductive growth stage. This stage is mainly to promote the massive formation of flowers to achieve the desired effect. In addition to keeping the substrate moist but not wet, the adjustment of light and fertilizer is still key.

To increase the number of flowers, this stage requires a fertilizer mainly composed of phosphorus and potassium. Alternate the use of 10-30-20 and 20-10-20 slow-release fertilizers at a concentration of 150ppm once or twice a week.

From September to the following February, products on the market must extend the light duration while fertilizing. If production cannot achieve 10 hours, intermittent light can be used to promote flowering.

V. Disease Prevention and Treatment

Severe diseases can occur during the later stages of the tobacco plant’s growth. It is crucial to implement comprehensive prevention measures during production, including regular application of medicine. Special attention must be made to prevent leaf rot and other diseases, especially after consecutive cloudy days in the summer.

VI. Primary Value

Tobacco plants possess a strong, spicy flavor, and a warm nature. They are toxic, yet they have the ability to regulate Qi, alleviate pain, promote blood circulation, dissipate blood stasis, detoxify, and kill pests.

These properties make them effective in treating angina, bellyache, carbuncle swelling, fire carbuncles, erysipelas, and snakebites.

The tobacco plant has an independent root system and bell-shaped flowers, which are round and come in a variety of vibrant colors, making them a stunning sight. The tobacco plant is a fascinating flower that typically blooms in dark weather or at night, closing during sunny days.
