Eden Rose: Exploring the Pierre de Ronsard Rose

The Pierre de Ronsard, also known as the Eden Rose, is an exceptionally beautiful variety of rose. It blooms in soft whites and pastel pinks, with a charming flower shape and a rapid growth rate.

Its only drawback might be its relatively short blooming period. This rose is suitable for pot cultivation to create floral columns, or it can be planted in the ground to form floral walls, arches, and so forth.

A single floral wall can produce over three hundred flowers, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Notably, the Pierre de Ronsard won the World Rose crown at the 2006 World Rose Convention in Osaka, Japan. At that time, only 11 varieties of roses had received this honor.

I. Basic Introduction

The Pierre de Ronsard (Rose Eden) is a plant in the rose family that is beloved worldwide. It is named after Pierre de Ronsard, who was known as the “rose poet” in the 16th century.

II. Characteristics

The flowers measure 7-10cm in diameter with 55 to 70 petals. They have a mild fragrance and a white-pink color. The plant size ranges from 100 to 365cm.

The Pierre de Ronsard (Rose Eden) was awarded the highest honor by the World Federation of Rose Societies:

World’s Favorite Rose, 2006. It can be grown as a floral column, floral arch, or climbing vine. In the early 1980s, the renowned rose company Meilland International from France bred a unique rose with subtle colors and a classic flower shape.

However, it did not conform to the aesthetic preferences for roses at the time. Consequently, this new variety was not particularly valued by Meilland. When they decided to discard this variety, their German agent recognized its unique potential to become a market favorite and to herald a new era.

In 1983, this agency proposed to Meilland that they continue testing and observing this rose.

III. Cultivation Method

The Dragon Sand Gem has specific soil requirements. It prefers loose, fertile soil that is aerated, can retain moisture and water, and can stabilize fertilizer. A suitable soil mix is 5 parts garden soil, 3 parts leaf mold, and 2 parts rice husk ash. In such soil, the Dragon Sand Gem will thrive.

The Dragon Sand Gem is a plant that loves sunshine, and thus it’s best to be kept outdoors. It tolerates semi-shade, can withstand cold, and has a strong adaptability.

The Dragon Sand Gem enjoys a moist environment. In the spring, summer, and autumn seasons, water it frequently. During summer, water it once in the morning and once in the evening to avoid direct sunlight or scorching heat.

Be careful not to splash water on the leaves when watering to prevent disease. However, reduce the frequency of watering in winter. If the soil is not completely dry in winter, don’t water it.

The Dragon Sand Gem is a plant that likes fertilizer. When fertilizing, we can use matured cow manure, chicken manure, soybean cake, etc. Apply liquid fertilizer once every half month.

Before budding in early spring, apply a richer liquid fertilizer, but do not fertilize during the flowering period. After the flowers fade in June, apply liquid fertilizer again, apply a medium liquid fertilizer in September, and apply mature organic fertilizer in December for wintering.

Primary Value

In 1985, the 400th anniversary of the death of the French “Rose Poet” Pierre de Ronsard, the French proposed to name it “Pierre de Ronsard”.

However, the German agent was deeply impressed by the beauty of this rose, which was perfect like the Garden of Eden, so it was launched on the German market as the “Eden rose”.

To distinguish it from the “Eden rose” hybrid tea rose introduced by the Meilland company in 1950, the new “Eden rose” was given the year and called Eden85.

The rose cultivated by the French was first launched and succeeded in the German market, which is a case of flowers blooming more beautifully outside the wall.

By 1988, the French could not wait any longer and strongly promoted this new product in their domestic market under the name Pierre de Ronsard. To distinguish it from the 1950 variety, it was also named with the year, “Eden88”.

Although there are many aliases on the market, it has only one registered name in the World Rose Society: “Meiviolin”. This is the Dragon Sand Gem that is popular around the world today.
