Coelogyne prolifera, commonly known as the Yellow-Green Coelogyne, is an orchid species with the following characteristics:
Morphological Features:
- Rhizomes: Slightly hard, around 5-6 mm thick, with shorter internodes densely covered in leathery scale-like sheaths.
- Pseudobulbs: Spaced 2.5-4 cm apart, they are narrow ovate-cylindrical, 2.2-3.7 cm long and 1-1.2 cm thick. When dry, they have a slight luster and produce two leaves at the tip, with several sheaths at the base.
- Leaves: Oblong-lanceolate or nearly oblong, 8-13 cm long, 1.6-2.1 cm wide, tapering to a point at the end; the petiole (leaf stalk) is 2-2.5 cm long.
- Flowers: The flower stem emerges from the center of the two leaves on mature pseudobulbs. The racemose inflorescence typically bears 4-6 flowers that are green or yellow-green and small, with a diameter of about 1 cm. Petals are linear, slightly narrowing towards the base, 5-6 mm long, and around 0.6 mm wide with a single vein. The lip is nearly ovate, 6-7 mm long, 5 mm wide, three-lobed with a shallow sac-like depression at the base. The side lobes are ovate and upright; the middle lobe is almost oval, about 4 mm long and 3 mm wide, slightly concave at the tip, with wavy edges and sometimes two faint longitudinal ridges.
- Fruit: Capsules are cylindrically elongated, 1.2-1.4 cm long and 5-6 mm thick. The flowering period is in June.
Habitat:
This orchid grows on trees or rocks in forests, at elevations between 1,200-2,000 meters. It is native to the western to southern parts of Yunnan, China.
Additionally, it can be found in Nepal, Sikkim, northeastern India, Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. The type specimen was collected from northeastern India.
Growth Habits:
Orchids generally grow on the slopes and cliffs of secluded mountain valleys, in places with good water permeability and retention, beside sparse grass, under the shade of secondary mixed forests. They prefer locations with shade, minimal direct sunlight, and scattered light exposure.
They thrive in areas with high humidity and good air circulation, and sometimes grow on steep cliffs beside mountain streams. Orchids should be planted in well-ventilated areas. They prefer shade, are averse to direct sunlight, love moisture, and dislike dryness.
The ideal temperature for growth is between 15°C and 30°C. Growth deteriorates at temperatures above 35°C. Temperatures below 5°C can affect their vitality, often putting the orchids in a dormant state.
If exposed to very high temperatures and sunlight, the leaves can get scorched within a day or two. If not moved indoors during extreme cold, they might suffer from frostbite.
Orchids have fleshy roots and should be planted in sandy loam soil rich in humus, with excellent drainage. Leaf mold or soil rich in organic matter is ideal. Slightly acidic pine soil or iron-rich soil with a pH of 5.5-6.5 is suitable.
The Yellow-Green Coelogyne, due to its aesthetic appeal, is cultivated and holds significant horticultural value.
Propagation
Propagation can be done during both spring and autumn, typically every three years. Plants with healthy growth and dense pseudobulbs can be divided. When dividing, at least five connected pseudobulbs should be retained in each cluster.
Before dividing, it’s recommended to reduce watering to make the soil drier. After dividing and potting, first cover the bottom hole of the pot with broken tile pieces, followed by coarse stones, filling 1/5 to 1/4 of the pot’s depth.
Then, add coarse and fine soil, followed by sandy soil rich in humus. The planting depth should be just enough to bury the pseudobulbs. Leave about 2 cm from the pot’s edge and top it with green moss or fine stones.
Water thoroughly and place in a shady spot for 10-15 days. Keep the soil moist, gradually reduce watering, and continue with normal care.
Pest and Disease Control
- Rust Fungus: Often seen on both the upper and lower surfaces of leaves and less commonly on stems. This disease causes raised blisters filled with yellow, orange, rust, or even purple-black powdery spores. While not lethal, it weakens the plant. To control, diseased leaves can be pruned and a solution of 65% Dithane Z-78 (500-600 times dilution) or a copper fungicide can be sprayed.
- White Rot: Commonly occurs during the rainy season. Initially, the base of the leaves is covered with white mycelium, leading to rotting of the rhizome. Prevention involves removing the infected soil and applying either a chlorine nitrobenzene powder or lime. For control, ensure good ventilation and drainage. Severely infected plants should be destroyed.
- Anthracnose: This disease can occur year-round but is more rampant during warm, rainy seasons. The disease starts at the leaf tip and extends towards the rhizome, turning brown and gradually expanding. It can cause the entire plant to die. To control, improve environmental conditions and spray with 50% methyl tobujin wettable powder (800-1500 times dilution) every 7-10 days. This can be followed by a 1% Bordeaux mixture every two weeks, spraying 3-5 times in total.
- Scale Insects (commonly known as “Orchid Lice”): They breed rapidly in high temperatures with high humidity and poor air circulation. During their hatching period, spray with 1% Parathion or 1500 times diluted 50% malathion. If there aren’t many pots, they can also be manually brushed off.
