Cerasus glandulosa: Unveiling the Beauty of a Hardy Ornamental Shrub

The Cerasus glandulosa, a member of the Rosaceae family and the genus Prunus, is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 2 meters tall.

Its leaves are ovate-elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, ranging from 5-8 centimeters in length, with a tapering acute tip often rounded at the end, a broadly cuneate base, and finely serrated margins.

The leaves are glabrous on both sides or sparsely hairy along the midrib on the underside; the petiole is 4-6 millimeters long. The flowers are pink or nearly white, about 2 centimeters in diameter, with pedicels approximately 1 centimeter long.

The fruit is nearly spherical, 1-1.5 centimeters in diameter, and red in color. The Bush Cherry is quite hardy and adaptable, preferring full sunlight. It is quite frost-resistant and adaptable.

Known for its beauty, it is commonly cultivated in gardens everywhere for ornamental purposes. It is suitable for planting on lawns, roadside areas, rock gardens, and forest edges.

It can also be used for foundational plantings, potting, forcing blooms, or as cut flower material. It grows on slopes, by ditches, or within shrubbery, and is also cultivated in gardens, at elevations of 800-2300 meters. It is distributed in China and Japan.

I. Morphological Characteristics

The Bush Cherry is a shrub, typically 0.5-1.5 meters tall, but can occasionally reach 2 meters. Its young branches are gray-brown or brownish, either glabrous or covered with short soft hairs.

The winter buds are ovate and are either hairless or have a sparse covering of short soft hairs.

The leaf blades are oblong-lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, 2.5-6 centimeters long and 1-2 centimeters wide, tapering to a pointed tip and cuneate at the base, with the widest part in the middle, and have fine, blunt, doubly serrate edges.

The upper surface is green, the underside pale green, and both surfaces are either glabrous or sparsely hairy along the midvein.

There are 4-5 pairs of lateral veins; the petiole is 1.5-3 millimeters long, either hairless or sparsely hairy on the upper surface; the stipules are linear, about 5 millimeters long.

The flowers are solitary or paired, blooming simultaneously or nearly so with the leaves. The pedicels are 6-8 millimeters long and almost hairless.

The calyx tube is bell-shaped, roughly equal in length and width, and hairless, with triangular-ovate sepals that have serrated edges and taper to a sharp point.

The petals are white or pink, obovate; there are 30 stamens, and the style is slightly longer than the stamens, either glabrous or sparsely hairy at the base.

The drupe is red or purplish-red, nearly spherical, and 1-1.3 centimeters in diameter. The flowering period is from March to April, and the fruiting period is from May to August. It has a chromosome number of 2n=16.

In the wild and especially in cultivation, this species varies significantly, leading some to classify several varieties or forms based on flower color, whether they are single or double-petaled, pedicel length, young branch and style hairiness, among other variations.

These characteristics do not follow a particular geographic pattern and can be treated as variations.

II. Growth Environment

The Bush Cherry is fairly frost-tolerant and adaptable, thrives in sunlight, and can withstand both drought and wet conditions. It has a well-developed root system but does not tolerate waterlogging or heavy, clay soils, preferring moist, well-drained sandy loam.

III. Distribution Range

It is found on slopes, in gullies, or in thickets, and can be cultivated in gardens at altitudes ranging from 800 to 2300 meters. It is also found in Japan.

IV. Growth and Propagation

Common propagation methods include division or grafting, with the Japanese peach as the rootstock. Cuttings are also used, particularly semi-hardwood cuttings in summer, which root easily.

V. Pest and Disease Control

Bush Cherry seedlings are prone to insect damage. In September, the seedling beds for one-year-old cuttings, after removing the plastic covering, and during the second year of bed maintenance, are susceptible to pests and diseases.

To prevent these, spray with either a 10.25% concentration of carbendazim or a 0.1% concentration of phoxim every two weeks.

The most common pest is the tent caterpillar; for larger plants during the growing season, spray once with a 0.1% concentration of phoxim as a preventative measure.
