Flowers around the world are astonishingly diverse. Some flowers have unique shapes, some are incredibly expensive, and some are extremely large.
Today, I’ve compiled a list of the largest flowers in the world, including the Titan Arum, Rafflesia, Sunflower, Giant Water Lily, Granadilla, Elephant Foot Yam, Corpse Flower, Peony, Lily, Hibiscus, and more.

The Titan Arum, when it blooms, emits an odor similar to a decaying body, hence it’s also known as the Corpse Flower.
This member of the Araceae family, originally from the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, boasts the world’s largest unbranched inflorescence. Its pale green flower spike can reach over 3 meters in height, with flowers reaching up to 1.5 meters in diameter.
The Titan Arum, which grows wild in Sumatra’s tropical rainforests, blooms only two or three times in its life and the bloom is short-lived, lasting only a few days before wilting rapidly after producing fruit.
Rafflesia is native to the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, Java, and Sumatra in Indonesia. Known for its large, foul-smelling flowers, it is often referred to as the “Queen of the Flowers.”
This parasitic plant, although not a true “man-eating flower,” has an extremely short stem and no leaves or underground stem. Its nutrient-absorbing organ has evolved into a mycelium-like structure that invades the tissues of its host.
The nutrients absorbed from the host are almost entirely devoted to the growth of the flower, which can reach a diameter of 0.9144 meters, with the record being 1.4 meters, and weigh up to 10 kg. The Rafflesia only blooms once in its lifetime, and the blooming period lasts only 4 days.
The Sunflower, also known as the “Helianthus,” is named for its habit of turning its flowers towards the sun. It is a tall annual herb, growing between 1-3.5 meters tall, with the tallest reaching up to 9 meters.
The sunflower has an erect stem and extremely large head-like inflorescence. The traditional sunflower variety called “Taraumara” has flowers reaching 60 centimeters in diameter, making it one of the world’s largest flowers. It blooms in the summer.
The Giant Water Lily is a large perennial or annual aquatic plant with an upright, root-like short stem and well-developed adventitious roots. Known for its giant saucer-like leaves floating on the water surface, it is also famous for its fragrant and color-changing flowers.
The flower is large, solitary, 25-40 centimeters in diameter, and 10-22 centimeters long. It has the world’s most beautiful and gigantic unique round leaves, reaching over 2 meters in diameter.
The flowering period of the Giant Water Lily is in summer or autumn, usually lasting three days, with the flower color changing each day. Because of this characteristic, people call it the “Capricious Goddess.”
The Giant Carrion Flower, also known as the Stink Lily, is a plant from the Stapeliad family, native to tropical Africa. It thrives in fertile soil and is cultivated in southern China, mainly in Shanghai. This succulent perennial plant has thick stems and no leaves.
Its large, yellow-green flowers radiate out in a star shape, spanning 28-40 centimeters in diameter. It’s one of the largest flowers in the world. Its pale yellow flowers, with faint black-purple horizontal stripes and hairy edges, emit a foul smell.
It blooms in the autumn, and the flower is magnificent, resembling a starfish. The foul smell is used to attract flies for pollination.
The Elephant Foot Yam, a member of the Araceae family, grows in shrubs, riverbanks, and wastelands and is not yet cultivated by humans.
Its leaf stalks are tall and robust, and the flower is large and peculiar, emerging above the ground in an inverted bell shape, cloaked by a broad spathe around 30cm tall and 40cm in diameter. The spathe is purple on the top, green at the bottom, and decorated with white patterns, with a deep purple interior.
The spadix is hidden deeply within the spathe, with only the conical green-purple appendage visible. This plant is also referred to as the “corpse flower” due to the smell of decay it emits when in bloom.
The Corpse Flower, another member of the Araceae family, thrives in shrubs, riversides, and wastelands. It is not yet cultivated by humans. Its leaf stalks are tall and robust, and the flower is large and distinctive.
It sprouts from the ground, showcasing an inverted ancient bell shape enclosed by a large spathe, about 30cm tall, with a mouth diameter of about 40cm. The outer spathe is purple at the top, green at the bottom, and adorned with white stripes, while the inside is deep purple.
The spadix is hidden deep within the spathe, and only the conical purple-green appendage is visible. This flower, due to the putrid smell it emits when it blooms, also earned the unlovable name “corpse flower.”
The King Protea, also known as Protea cynaroides, is the national flower of the Republic of South Africa. Its large, uniquely shaped, and vibrantly colored flowers are noble and elegant, earning it the title “King of Flowers.” The actual flower is a flower head with many stamens, surrounded by large, colorful bracts. The flower head varies in diameter from 12 to 30 centimeters.
The color of the bracts ranges from creamy white to deep red. The plant has a sturdy stem, glossy leaves, and the mature plant stands about 1 meter tall.
The King Protea, known for its long-lasting blooms, is hailed as the most luxurious and magnificent flower in the world, with high ornamental and medicinal value.
Peony, also known as the Minister of Flowers, is a perennial herb in the peony family, part of the order Saxifragales.
Peony petals are ovate, and its shallow cup-shaped flower disk blooms from May to June. The flowers generally grow at the top or near the top of the stem, and the original species have white flowers with 5 to 13 petals.
Cultivated varieties of peony have a rich range of colors, including white, pink, red, purple, yellow, green, black, and multiple colors, with a diameter of 10 to 30 centimeters and up to hundreds of petals.
The lily is a perennial herbaceous bulbous plant from the Lily family and genus, native to the temperate regions of nearly every continent in the northern hemisphere.
Lilies are elegant, with fresh, graceful leaves and upright stems, and they are prized as cut flowers. There are many varieties of lilies, such as Asian lilies, musk lilies, perfume lilies, and yellow heaven lilies. They produce large flowers that can be solitary, clustered, or in a raceme.
