The tip is gradually pointed or nearly caudate, with a short sharp head, and the base is round or broadly cuneate. The upper side of the leaf has sparse scales, and the underside has yellow or brown scales, spaced 1/2 to 6 times their diameter apart.

The midrib and side veins are slender, with roughly 12 pairs of side veins, which are not distinct on both surfaces; the petiole measures 5-9 millimeters in length and is sparsely covered in scales.

Azaleas originate from high-altitude areas and prefer cool, humid climates, while harsh, dry heat is detrimental to them. They require soil rich in humus, loose, moist, and acidic with a pH between 5.5-6.5.

Some species and horticultural varieties have strong adaptability and can withstand drought and poor soil, growing even in soil with a pH between 7-8. However, growth is stunted in clay-heavy or poorly drained soils.

Azaleas have certain light requirements but do not tolerate direct sunlight. During summer and autumn, deciduous trees or shade structures should shield them from intense sunlight, and the ground should be regularly sprayed with water.

Azalea shoots generally appear in spring and autumn, primarily in spring. The optimal growth temperature is 15-20℃. They bloom in March and April and can withstand pruning.

Pruning is generally carried out before May, and the new shoots that spring up can form flower buds within the year. Pruning too late will impact blooming.

V. Cultivation Methods

Fertilizer and Water Management

Azaleas require acidic soil to grow and develop. As the soil in the northern regions tends to be alkaline, the potting soil should be a mixture of decayed pine needle soil and other humus soils.

Azaleas have fibrous root systems and have strict requirements for fertilizer concentration and water quality. Fertilizer application should follow the principle of timely and appropriate amounts, with frequent application of diluted fertilizer.

To promote the growth of leaves and flower buds before spring blooming, phosphorus fertilizer can be applied once a month. After blooming, apply a mix of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer 1-2 times.

During the bud-forming period in September and October, apply phosphorus fertilizer 1-2 times. During the growing and blooming period, more fertilizer and water are required.

Conversely, during winter dormancy and slow summer growth, fertilizer and water should be controlled to prevent root rot. Azaleas like a wet and cool environment. In the dry climate of the north, timely watering and misting are necessary to maintain high air humidity.

The best watering solutions are alum fertilizer water and rainwater. If using tap water, add a small amount of ferrous sulfate and vinegar. Pieces of watermelon or tomato can also be added to improve soil quality and flower quality.

Pruning and Shaping

To accelerate blooming, azaleas often have their tops pinched to stimulate new branch growth. Unwanted buds that cluster and affect the flower shape can be pruned early.

Not only does this make the current year’s flowers larger and more vibrant, but it also benefits the growth and blooming of the plant in the following year. Azaleas have strong sprouting power.

Branches that severely affect the plant’s growth and development and reduce its aesthetic and commercial value should be pruned. Pruning is generally done after the flowers fade in spring and in autumn.

Dead branches, slanted branches, overgrown branches, pest-infested branches, and some crossing branches should be cut off to avoid nutrient depletion and ensure the entire plant blooms abundantly.

Flowering Period Control

Azaleas undergo bud differentiation in the autumn. Through refrigeration and heating treatments, the flowering period can be controlled artificially.

To make azaleas bloom early, move them to a greenhouse, maintain a temperature of 20-25℃, and frequently spray water on the branches and leaves to maintain a relative humidity of over 80%. This will allow them to bloom after a month and a half.

To delay azalea blooming, keep the azaleas that have formed buds in a low-temperature state, maintaining a temperature of 2-4℃, water when the pot is dry, move outdoors in summer and autumn, and they can bloom after two weeks.

VI. Propagation Methods

Cutting

The most common method of propagation for rhododendrons is cutting, typically carried out in May and June. Semi-woody new branches about 5-8 centimeters long are cut, with the lower leaves removed and 2-3 top leaves retained.

The base of the cutting should preferably be treated with a solution of indole butyric acid or ABT rooting powder, then inserted into loose, breathable, humus-rich acidic soil.

The temperature should be kept between 20-25°C, the cuttings shaded and regularly misted to promote new root growth.

Grafting

Grafting is used for valuable and hard-to-survive species like Western Rhododendrons. A tender branch about 3-4 centimeters long is cut, its base is whittled into a wedge shape, and it is grafted onto a rootstock of Rhododendron lanatum.

The graft is then placed under a shade, wrapped in plastic film, and enclosed in a plastic bag to retain moisture.

VII. Disease Prevention and Control

Leaf Gall

Before the disease occurs, especially during leaf expansion, spray a 1:1:200 Bordeaux mixture. Diseased leaves should be removed promptly. Before sprouting, spray a 0.3-0.5 Pomide sulphur mixture or a 1:1:200 Bordeaux mixture 2-3 times, usually once every 7-10 days.

After the disease appears, spray a 65-80% Mancozeb 500 times solution or a 0.3-0.5 Pomide sulphur mixture 3-4 times, once every 7-10 days.

Leaf Spot Disease

For leaf spot and brown spot diseases, spray a 70% Methotrexate 1000 times solution, a 20% Rust Ning 4000 times solution, or a 50% Mancozeb 500 times solution from May to August, once every 10 days for a total of 7-8 times.

This can effectively control the development of the disease. To prevent leaf yellowing, additional ferrous sulfate can be applied.

Eriophyid Mite Disease

Affected tender branches and leaf tips are covered with a dense layer of white or pink mites, sometimes causing gall formation on leaves, often caused by aphid bites.

Prevention methods include spraying copper sulfate solution while removing diseased leaves; spraying oxidized Le Fruit emulsion or placing Furadan directly in the pot can prevent aphids and other piercing mouthpart pests.

VIII. Value and Others

Primary Value

Rhododendrons have lush branches and leaves, are beautifully varied, strongly sprouting, tolerant to pruning, and have unique rootstocks, making them excellent for bonsai.

They are best suited for planting in clusters at forest edges, along streams, by ponds, and beside rocks. They can also be scattered under sparse forests and are good materials for hedges, and can be trained into various forms through pruning.

During the flowering season, rhododendrons always give a lively and bustling feel, and in the off-season, their deep green leaves are very suitable for planting in gardens as low walls or barriers.
