Phlox drummondii: A Stunning Annual Herbaceous Plant

Phlox drummondii is an annual herbaceous plant with an upright stem, ranging in height from 15 to 45 centimeters.

It prefers warm conditions, is somewhat cold tolerant, but cannot withstand extreme heat. Native to Mexico, this plant is cultivated in gardens throughout China. The Phlox drummondii has a small stature and a wide range of flower colors.

I. Physical Characteristics

Phlox drummondii is an annual herbaceous plant with a height of 15-45 centimeters. The stem is upright, either single or branched, and glandular hairy.

The lower leaves are opposite, the upper leaves are alternate, and they can be broadly ovate, oblong, or lanceolate, measuring 2-7.5 centimeters in length.

The leaves are sharp at the top, gradually narrow at the base, or semi-encircle the stem, with a smooth edge and a hairy surface; there is no leaf stalk. The top of the plant features a cylindrical inflorescence, which is short and hairy.

The flowers have a short stalk; the calyx is tubular, with lanceolate diamond-shaped calyx lobes measuring 2-3 millimeters in length, hairy on the outside, and spreading or bending outwards when fruiting.

The corolla is disc-shaped, with a diameter of 1-2 centimeters, in light red, deep red, purple, white, light yellow, etc. The petals are round and slightly shorter than the corolla tube; the stamens and pistil are much shorter than the corolla.

The fruit is an elliptical capsule, about 5 millimeters long, with a persistent calyx at the bottom. The seeds are oblong, about 2 millimeters long, and brown.

Phlox drummondii prefers warm conditions, is somewhat cold tolerant, but cannot withstand extreme heat. In the northern China region, it can overwinter in cold beds.

It prefers well-drained, loose loamy soil, is not drought tolerant, and should not be waterlogged.
