Lavender, a fragrant purple flower known as the “Aromatic Herb” and “Queen of Herbs,” is not only a feast for the eyes but also carries a lasting scent.

So, which lavender variety is the most fragrant and beautiful? Here are the top ten most stunning types of lavender for you to explore, such as Narrow-Leaved Lavender, Feathered Lavender, Hidcote Lavender, Spanish Lavender, Woolly Lavender, and Betty’s Blue Lavender.

Let’s delve into the enchanting world of these species.

1. Narrow-Leaved Lavender

Narrow-Leaved Lavender

Also known as True Lavender or English Lavender, the Narrow-Leaved Lavender, hailing from the western Mediterranean, is one of the most beautiful types of lavender.

This evergreen perennial grows one to two meters tall, with streamlined, slender spikes and predominantly violet-blue flowers. It’s the most widely cultivated lavender species worldwide, thriving in dry environments.

It’s also cultivated in parts of our country, with blooming periods in July and August.

2. Feathered Lavender

Feathered Lavender

Feathered Lavender, native to the Canary Islands, is widely cultivated worldwide. It features bipinnate deeply divided leaves, arranged oppositely, and has a grey-green leaf color.

Its expansive growth and deep purple tubular flowers with darker stripes bloom throughout the year, creating an uninterrupted flowering spectacle in mass plantings.

This forms a stunning sea of purple, making it a favorite ornamental plant in Europe and an indispensable feature in leisure farms and herb restaurants in southern China.

3. Hidcote Lavender

Hidcote Lavender

When asked about the most fragrant and beautiful lavender, many people would nominate Hidcote Lavender. Extremely popular abroad, it’s the best-selling lavender variety in England.

This plant is relatively short, usually around 60 centimeters, and grows slowly. It has deep blue-purple petals and silver-green leaves, usually blooming from late spring to early summer. Its intense fragrance makes it a recommended variety for small gardens.

4. Spanish Lavender

 Spanish Lavender

Spanish Lavender, a semi-hardy small shrub from the Lamiaceae family, blooms from February to May at sea level and from April to October in mid-high altitude mountain areas.

Its unique flowers have persistent bracts that remain after the flowers wilt, often made into dried flowers for their beauty and aroma. It loves ample sunlight, remains unharmed in the scorching summer sun, and prefers slightly damp conditions during its growth period.

It’s moderately cold-tolerant, preferring temperatures between 5℃ to 10℃.

5. Woolly Lavender

Woolly Lavender

Woolly Lavender, native to the southern mountains of Spain, holds a special place in my heart as the most beautiful lavender variety. This distinct and adorable species grows in high-altitude areas, but when planted in regions with damp winters, it doesn’t demonstrate reliable cold resistance.

This may be due to the dense grey-white fuzz on its leaves, which readily absorbs water droplets from humid air.

In the autumn, the dry leaves of Woolly Lavender almost turn white in the sunlight. Its white, fuzzy leaves and vibrant purple flowers make it truly captivating.

6. Betty’s Blue Lavender

Betty's Blue Lavender

Betty’s Blue Lavender is one of the most beautiful types of lavender. It can grow up to 75 centimeters tall and 90 centimeters wide, with large flower spikes.

Not only does it emit a strong fragrance, but it also boasts beautiful, deep blue-purple flowers. It blooms from late spring to early summer, between April and June, and its growth habit is especially suitable for delicate small gardens.

This makes it a popular choice for ornamental planting, earning it high aesthetic value.

7. Purple Bouquet Lavender

Purple Bouquet Lavender

Wondering about the most popular lavender varieties? Purple Bouquet Lavender is a top choice for cut and dried flowers, and a favorite among many floral enthusiasts. This variety features slender flower stems and silver-green leaves.

The plant can reach about 50 centimeters, and the bright purple flowers bloom every summer. It’s a highly ornamental flower that prefers dry environments.

It’s essential to ensure good soil drainage and avoid waterlogging to prevent growth inhibition.

8. Munstead Lavender

Munstead Lavender

In terms of the most aesthetically pleasing lavender, Munstead Lavender is my favorite. It’s the second best-selling lavender variety in the UK, boasting light purple petals, grey-green leaves, and larger flower spikes.

The plant can grow up to 45 centimeters tall and emits a particularly strong fragrance when in bloom. Its compact size and slow growth rate make it a charming addition to any garden, primarily blooming in mid to late spring.

It thrives in cool environments and is one of the most popular lavender varieties in the United States. It also has a substantial market value domestically.

9. Royal Purple Lavender

Royal Purple Lavender

Looking for the best lavender variety? Royal Purple Lavender is also among the most popular. It features long flower stems and a vibrant, traditional purple color that seems to exude a hint of grey.

Even when dried, the flowers retain their color well. As a taller variety of English Lavender, it’s perfect for planting as low hedges.

However, if the climate is humid, ensure adequate spacing between plants for ventilation to avoid disease susceptibility.

10. Melissa Lavender

Melissa Lavender

Melissa Lavender is a variety of lavender with a plant height of 50 centimeters and a crown width of 60 centimeters.

What’s special about Melissa Lavender is the unique color of its flowers – an elegant light pink that fades to white as the flowers wilt. The medium-length flower stems are typically about 50 centimeters long, while the foliage is silver-green.

This gives the plant a pure appearance, making it a highly ornamental variety. It’s well-suited for indoor cultivation, blooming from late spring to early summer.
