The Joyful Morning Plum Blossom, also known as the Xi Shen, is one of the premium Spring Orchid varieties. Its beautiful flower shape earns it the title of “Supreme Divine Product” among “Plum-Shaped Daffodils”.

I. Characteristics and features

The outer three petals are round-headed and tight at the base. The pouch is fan-shaped, with a big red dot on the fringed lip, green in color, and the flower is charming with a tall flower frame.

The leaves are semi-drooping and narrow, with sharp spines along the edge. The leaves are long, measuring 20-25 cm in length and 0.8 cm in width. It is resistant to disease and easy to grow and bloom.

II. Cultivation methods

The Xi Shen is resistant and not prone to disease, and it blooms easily. However, the downside is that it has a low germination rate and is not vigorous. It is recommended to provide some shade and adequate fertilization and watering during regular care.

The Xi Shen leaves are about 25cm long and 0.8cm wide, with a narrow and pendulous shape. Each plant must have one leaf in a bow shape. The leaf base is tight, the sheath is low, and the leaf texture is thick and glossy.

The leaf groove is V-shaped, the leaf teeth are noticeably rough, and the leaf tip is sharp. The robust seedlings have fine red threads on the leaf stalk ring. Each seedling only has 3-5 leaves, and the leaves are drooping and elegantly arranged.

The plant shape is beautiful, qualifying it as a small variety among orchids. The new buds of the “Xi Shen” emerge early, as early as the end of April or beginning of May. The buds are bright green with a purple-red tip.

The flower bud is silver-red with green sand halo, adorned with deep purple streaks that reach the top. The bud tip has a white dot, and the bud end is hollow like a magpie’s beak.

The bud is bulging in the middle, with the inner bract halo densely covered in sand, and three bright green colour sheaths. The entire green sheath is edged in white.

The flower stalk is light green with pink threads, the stem node is heavily red-streaked, the stem is 15cm high, and can reach 20cm. The flower is flat or protruding. The outer three petals are short, round, and large, with a thin base.

The petal edge is a very good arc shape, the length to width ratio is close to 2:1, the edge is slightly tight with a thin white edge. When fully opened, the white edge dissolves, the shoulder is flat, the color is green, and the main petal is straight and covers the bottom.

The wide fan-shaped pouch, pouch end sealed with a white edge, although the back of the petal is arc-shaped and relatively small, the upper pouch does not show the stamens; the lower pouch and fringed lip are full.

A large rounded red spot is set on the large fringed lip. The central palace is perfectly combined, and it matches the outer petals appropriately. The Xi Shen is resistant, not prone to disease, and blooms easily.

However, the downside is that it has a low germination rate and is not vigorous. It is recommended to provide some shade and adequate fertilization and watering during regular care.
