Hibiscus syriacus: The Stunning Deciduous Shrub of Malvaceae

The Hibiscus syriacus, a deciduous shrub from the Malvaceae family, boasts a tall stature. Its small branches are covered in yellow star-shaped fluff. Its leaves are diamond-shaped to ovate, with linear-shaped stipules covered in soft hairs.

The flowers bloom singularly between the ends of branches and leaf axils. Both the calyx and the flowers are bell-shaped, exhibiting a faint purple color. The flowers are ovate in shape and externally covered in soft hairs and long star-shaped fluff.

The fruit is ovate, bearing yellow star-shaped fluff. The seeds are kidney-shaped with a back covered in long yellow-white soft hairs. The blooming period is from July to October.

The Hibiscus syriacus thrives in light, slightly shady conditions. It prefers a warm, moist climate, and can withstand both heat and cold. It isn’t very demanding in terms of soil, growing well in loose, well-ventilated soil rich in various nutrients.

It can tolerate dryness and infertility, preferring moist conditions but also drought-resistant. Its main methods of propagation include seeding, layering, cutting, and dividing.

The Hibiscus syriacus has the ability to clear heat, detoxify, benefit moisture, and reduce swelling. It’s used to treat coughs, lung abscesses, intestinal abscesses, bloody diarrhea due to intestinal wind, painful hemorrhoids, leukorrhea, and scabies.

The leaves can be used to wash hair, helping to stop itching and remove dandruff. As a decorative shrub for summer and autumn, it’s a common flower species in gardens.

It has a certain resistance to harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide and chloride, and also has dust retention capabilities, making it a primary greening tree species for polluted factories.

I. Morphological Characteristics

The Hibiscus syriacus, a deciduous shrub from the Malvaceae family, boasts a tall stature. Its small branches are densely covered in yellow star-shaped fluff. The stipules are linear-shaped and covered in soft hairs.

The leaves are diamond-shaped to triangular-ovate, 3-10 cm long and 2-4 cm wide, with varying degrees of 3 splits or no splits, showing obvious three main veins. The top is blunt, the base is wedge-shaped, and the margin has uneven teeth.

The underside of the leaf is slightly hairy or nearly hairless along the veins; the leaf stalk is 5-25 mm long and covered in star-shaped fluff; the stipules are linear, about 6 mm long, and sparsely covered in soft hairs.

Hibiscus syriacus

The flowers bloom singularly between the ends of branches and leaf axils. The flower stalk is 4-14 mm long and covered in star-shaped short fluff. The small bracts are 6-8, linear, 6-15 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, and densely covered in star-shaped sparse fluff.

The calyx is bell-shaped, 14-20 mm long, and densely covered in star-shaped short fluff, with 5 triangular segments. The flowers are bell-shaped and come in colors such as pure white, light pink, light purple, and purple-red, with single, double, and multiple petals.

The diameter is 5-6 cm, the petals are ovate, 3.5-4.5 cm long, and the outside is sparsely covered in soft hairs and long star-shaped fluff. The stamen column is about 3 cm long; the pistil branch is hairless.

The capsule fruit is ovate, about 12 mm in diameter, and densely covered in yellow star-shaped fluff. The seeds are kidney-shaped, mature seeds are black-brown, and the back is covered in long yellow-white soft hairs. The blooming period is from July to October.

IV. Distribution Range

The Hibiscus genus is primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions. Its species originated on the African continent, where a wealth of Hibiscus species exhibit a rich genetic diversity.

V. Growth Habits

Hibiscus adapts well to various environments, tolerating both dry and barren conditions. It does not require specific soil types and can grow even in heavy clay.

It prefers light, can tolerate shade, and thrives in warm, humid climates. It is resistant to pruning, heat and cold. However, in northern regions, it requires protection during winter.

It is best suited to loose, well-aerated soil rich in various nutrients. It can withstand dryness and barrenness, and prefers moist conditions but can also tolerate drought. It has a strong propensity for sprouting.

VI. Propagation Methods

Hibiscus can be propagated through seeding, layering, cuttings, and division of clumps, but cuttings and division are predominantly used in production.

Division

Before budding in early spring, dig up vigorous adult clumps, divide into groups of three main branches each, and plant at a distance of 50×60 cm between each clump and row.

Cuttings

Method One: Spring cuttings are commonly used, resulting in flowers in the summer and autumn of that year. After the local temperature stabilizes above 15°C, choose 1-2 year old robust un-budded branches (if the Hibiscus branch has already sprouted leaves at the time of cutting, remove the new leaves).

Cut these into 15-20 cm segments. Prepare a small stick to pre-drill holes at the plant row distance, then insert the Hibiscus branch. The ideal depth in the soil is 10-15 cm, which is about two-thirds the length of the cutting.

Firmly compress the soil and immediately saturate with water after planting. There is no need to apply any base fertilizer when cutting.

Method Two: The density of cuttings depends on whether they are transplanted or directly planted. For transplanting: To facilitate operation, prepare ridges 130 cm wide and 25 cm high, and plant cuttings at a distance of 15 cm x 30 cm.

For direct planting: Prepare ridges 60 cm wide and 25 cm high, and plant at a distance of 50 cm. You can also prepare ridges 90 cm wide and 25 cm high, and plant at a distance of 60 cm, in a double row “品” shape.

Take advantage of the characteristic of cuttings to flower in the same year, and thin out the seedlings every year before spring budding to ensure sufficient nutritional area for Hibiscus growth, aiming for high flower yield.


Method Three: The cuttings require a trench depth of 15 cm, a trench distance of 20-30 cm, and a plant distance of 8-10 cm. The upper end of the cutting should be 3-5 cm above the soil surface or two-thirds the length of the cutting should be in the soil.

After planting, firm the soil and water immediately. Cuttings generally root and sprout in about a month. Using heat preservation and temperature increase facilities such as plastic greenhouses, cuttings can also be cultivated after leaf fall in autumn.

Cut the prepared cuttings and soak them in a solution of 100-200 mg/l NAA for 18-24 hours, insert them into the sand bed, water immediately, cover with film, keep the temperature at 18-25°C, and the relative humidity above 85%. After rooting, move them to the nursery for cultivation.

VII. Planting Technique

Planting

After preparing the nursery bed, construct furrows that are 130 cm wide and 25 cm high. For each square meter, apply 6 kg of farmyard manure, 1.5 kg of burnt soil, and 75 g of calcium magnesium phosphate as base fertilizer.

Hibiscus is a fast-growing perennial shrub that can be planted and harvested for many years. To achieve a higher yield, facilitate field management, and flower harvesting, adopt single-row ridge cultivation, with ridge spacing of 110-120 cm and plant spacing of 50-60 cm.

Planting holes or trenches are made in the middle of the ridge. When transplanting hibiscus, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied in the planting hole or trench, generally using waste soil or decomposed farmyard manure, along with a small amount of compound fertilizer.

Transplanting is best done during the seedling dormancy period or in the rainy growing season. Some branches and leaves should be pruned during transplanting to aid survival. After planting, water the plant thoroughly once and keep the soil moist until the plant is established.

Fertilizer and Watering

When branches start budding, timely top dressing with quick-acting fertilizer should be applied to promote nutritional growth. Apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers 1-2 times before budding to encourage bud formation.

Keep the soil moist and apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, supplemented with nitrogen fertilizer, twice from May to October during the flowering period.

During the plant’s dormant period in winter, weed and clean the garden, dig trenches or holes around the plant, and apply farmyard manure, supplemented with an appropriate amount of inorganic compound fertilizer, to supply the nutrients needed for growth and flowering in the coming year.

In case of long-term drought, irrigation should be carried out, while excess rainwater should be drained to prevent waterlogging.

Pruning

Newly planted hibiscus plants are small and can be left to grow or lightly pruned for the first 1-2 years, i.e., cutting off dead branches, pest-infested weak branches, and declining branches in autumn and winter.

As the tree grows larger, shape-pruning should be performed on the hibiscus plant. This should be done after the leaves fall in autumn. Depending on the degree of hibiscus branch spread, they can be categorized into erect and spreading types.

The branches of the erect type of hibiscus have a small attachment angle, are nearly vertical, have strong budding power, relatively poor branching power, and are not tolerant to long-term growth.

They can be cultivated and transformed into a tree shape with a main trunk without layers. Select 3-4 main branches on the main trunk, thin out the rest, and choose 1-2 side branches on each main branch, termed as a heart-shaped tree with a main trunk.

Pruning method for upright hibiscus: Reasonably select and retain the main and lateral branches, and gradually thin out the excess ones to ensure a well-distributed branching pattern.

Trim back the main and lateral branches, ensuring new branches have a larger angle and are correctly oriented. Prune densely distributed peripheral branches to allow for sufficient light and air circulation.

After the robust flowering branches of the first year bloom, hold back on pruning them; the following year, remove all the vigorous branches and robust flowering branches that sprout from these, leaving the medium and short branches to bloom.

Continually renew the older, thinner branches inside the plant by cutting them back. Shorten the central flowering branches at their branching points to effectively regulate the vigor of the branches and improve the quality of the flower buds.

Trim the tips of the peripheral branches, leaving the outer buds on the cut surface; typically, this will result in three robust branches. Remove competing branches at the tip, hold back the others, and then cultivate them into a branch group.

Open-form hibiscus has larger branch angles and more spread-out branches. It grows vigorous branches and central flowering branches more strongly than upright forms, and can be cultivated into a cluster-forming shrub.

Open-form hibiscus often experiences problems like too many main branches, peripheral branches drooping prematurely, and numerous, disordered upright branches within the plant.

Pruning method for open-form hibiscus: Replace the main branch with a back branch in time to prevent the peripheral branches from drooping and aging prematurely, treating the branch tip the same way as for the open heart form.

Generally, remove the upright branches sprouting inside the plant to prevent too many branches from disrupting the tree form.

Harvesting

he hibiscus has a long flowering period from May to October, approximately half a year. However, a single flower blooms in the early morning and wilts by the second day. Therefore, flowers intended for vegetable use should be picked every morning.

If the flowers are to be sun-dried, they should be picked on a sunny morning and dried immediately. Once dry, they should be stored in a well-ventilated, dry place to prevent crushing and insect damage.

VIII. Pest and Disease Control

During the growth period of the hibiscus, there are relatively few pests and diseases. The main diseases include anthracnose, leaf blight, and powdery mildew; the main pests include red spiders, aphids, bagworms, night moths, and longhorn beetles.

When pests and diseases occur, infected branches can be pruned, and safe, efficient, and low-toxicity pesticides can be sprayed for prevention or trapping.

It is essential to focus on early prevention and avoid administering medication during the flowering and harvesting period to ensure that the harvested hibiscus flowers are not contaminated by pesticides.

Common leaf spot and rust diseases can be treated by spraying a 600 times diluted solution of 65% zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate.

Other pests include mealybugs and gold beetles, primarily aphids, and also loopers and leafrollers, which can be killed by spraying a 1000 times diluted solution of 40% oxydemeton-methyl emulsion.

A safe method for the environment to eliminate pests is using diluted detergent.

IX. Primary Value

Medicinal Use

Hibiscus has heat-clearing and detoxifying functions, can benefit dampness and reduce swelling, and is used to treat coughs, lung abscesses, intestinal abscesses, bloody dysentery, hemorrhoid pain, leucorrhea, and scabies.

Its leaves can be used to wash the hair, relieving itchiness and dandruff, as recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica. The flowers, fruits, roots, leaves, and bark of the hibiscus can all be used as medicine.

They have the functions of preventing viral diseases and lowering cholesterol. Hibiscus flowers can be taken orally to treat indigestion, dysentery, prolapse of the anus, hematemesis, bloody stool, mumps, and excessive leucorrhea, and can be applied externally to treat boils and swellings.

Hibiscus flowers contain saponins, isomyrtin, and other saponins, which have a certain inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella, and can be used to treat bloody dysentery.

Edible Use

Hibiscus flowers are extremely nutritious, containing proteins, fats, crude fiber, reducing sugars, vitamin C, amino acids, iron, calcium, zinc, and flavonoid active compounds.

The taste of hibiscus flower buds is crisp, and the fully bloomed hibiscus flower is smooth. Hibiscus flower juice made from hibiscus flowers has the health effects of quenching thirst and refreshing the mind.

Regular consumption of hibiscus flower soup by hypertensive patients has good dietary therapeutic effects.

Ornamental Use

Hibiscus is an important ornamental shrub in summer and autumn, and it is a common shrub flower in gardens. It is often used as a flower hedge and green hedge in the south, and as a garden decoration and indoor potted plant in the north.
