Gentiana Dahurica: The Enchanting Dahurian Gentian Explained

Gentiana dahurica, commonly known as Dahurian gentian, belongs to the Gentianaceae family and is a perennial herbaceous plant. The plant can grow up to 25 cm in height, with clustered stems.

The rosette leaves are lanceolate or linear-elliptical, tapering at the tip and narrowing at the base, with flat leaf stalks. The stem leaves are linear-lanceolate or linear. The inflorescences are terminal or axillary umbels.

The calyx is membranous, yellow-green or purplish-red, undivided, irregular, and linear. The corolla is a deep blue color, sometimes with yellow spots near the throat. The corolla lobes are ovate or ovate-elliptical, blunt at the tip, and entire at the margins.

The fruit is an enclosed capsule, elliptical-lanceolate, and stalkless. The seeds bear fine reticulated patterns. The flowering period is in July, and the fruiting period is from August to September.

Habitat & Distribution:

Gentiana dahurica is native to Sichuan, China. It can be found growing at altitudes ranging from 870 to 4500 meters in fields, along roadsides, riverbanks, sandy shores of lakes, water ditch sides, sunny mountain slopes, and dry grasslands.

Morphological Features:

• This perennial herb grows 10-25 cm tall, with the whole plant being smooth and hairless. The base is covered by persistent fibrous leaf sheaths.
• It has numerous roots twisted into a conical shape.
• The branches are numerous, slanting upwards, and are yellow-green or purplish-red. They are nearly round and smooth.
• The rosette leaves are lanceolate or linear-elliptical, measuring 5-15 cm in length and 0.8-1.4 cm in width. They taper at the tip and gradually narrow at the base, with 3-5 prominent veins on both sides.
• The stamens are situated in the middle to lower part of the corolla tube. The anthers are rectangular and 2-3 mm long. The ovary is stalkless, lanceolate, or linear, 18-23 mm long.
• The fruit is an enclosed capsule, stalkless, and narrowly elliptical, measuring 2.5-3 cm in length. The seeds are light brown, shiny, rectangular, and 1.3-1.5 mm long with a fine net-like pattern.

Growth Environment:

Gentiana dahurica prefers damp and cool climatic conditions. It is cold-resistant, tolerant to intense light, but not stagnant water. It isn’t very demanding regarding soil conditions but thrives best in moist soil with high organic matter.

Optimal growth occurs at elevations between 1500 and 2000 meters, with a frost-free period of more than 124 days annually, an average yearly temperature of 3°C, an average January temperature of 15°C, and an average July temperature of 19°C.

It benefits from 2500-3000 hours of sunlight per year, with a 65-75% sunshine percentage and an average annual rainfall of 250-400 mm. Suitable soil types include loamy sand, gravelly sand, and alluvial soils.

Distribution Range:

The plant is distributed across China, Russia, and Mongolia. Scattered plantings can be found in Wuchuan County and Siziwang Banner in Inner Mongolia.

Propagation Methods

Seed Collection:

• Seed Quality Requirements: Choose full and bug-free wild Gentiana dahurica seeds collected from mid-September to early October in the previous autumn for seedling cultivation. Seeds should have a viability of no less than 75%, a germination rate of no less than 70%, and a purity of no less than 95%.
• Seed Retention Requirements: Select healthy, uniformly growing 3-4-year-old Gentiana dahurica as the seed retention field. The distance between the seed field and the production field should be more than 200 meters. Start collecting seeds from early to mid-September. Harvest when the seed pods turn light yellow. Cut the fruit with a portion of the stem, place in a well-ventilated area, and after post-ripening, sun-dry and thresh. Remove impurities and select full seeds with a brownish luster for use.

Seed Treatment:

• The seeds of Gentiana dahurica are narrowly elliptical, 0.9-1.4 mm long and 0.3-0.5 mm wide. They are light brown with a fine net-like pattern on the surface.
• Cold Storage Treatment: Before soil freezing, choose a well-drained shady spot to dig a 1-meter-deep pit. Mix seeds, fine sand, and snow at a volume ratio of 1:10:20. Place the mixture in a sack, place it in the pit, cover the top with 30-50 cm of snow, and cover with straw or shading net. Retrieve during sowing.
• Low-Temperature Storage: Store the collected Gentiana dahurica seeds in a cloth bag and keep in a warehouse at 5-10°C. Retrieve during sowing. Due to the reduced snowfall in the western region of Inner Mongolia, snow storage isn’t feasible, so low-temperature storage is the primary method.

Nursery Preparation:

Select sandy loam with irrigation facilities for the nursery. Apply base fertilizer and plow after fertilizing to a depth of 30-35 cm. Construct raised beds 6-10 meters long, 3 meters wide, and 10-15 cm high, then level and refine with a rake.

Sowing Method:

From mid-June to early July, mix seeds with 10-20 times their volume of fine sand. Manually broadcast the seeds uniformly, cover the surface with 2-3 mm of fine sand, and water thoroughly. Keep the seedbed moist until seedlings emerge.

Cover the seedbed with grass curtains or shading nets. Remove these after seedlings appear. The sowing rate is 22.5-30 kg/hectare. After sowing, keep the seedbed moist.

Main Value:

The primary component of Gentiana dahurica is gentiopicrin, which has effects like dispelling wind and dampness, alleviating pain, relaxing tendons, clearing deficiency heat, and promoting diuresis. It can be used to treat tonsillitis, urticaria, anthrax, and rheumatoid arthritis.
