Most people associate cherry blossoms with the color pink, but in fact, cherry blossoms come in several colors. So, what are the colors of cherry blossoms?

Let’s clarify that cherry blossoms come in three main colors, although there are subtle differences among different varieties.

Some cherry blossoms can even be identified by their color, making the viewing experience a delightful aesthetic treat. Discovering the different colors of cherry blossoms can add an element of intrigue.

What are the colors of cherry blossoms?

1. If we separate the colors visible to the naked eye, there are three: pink, red, and white. Different varieties of cherry blossoms have different flower colors. Even if they all appear pink, a closer look reveals variations, some leaning towards red, others towards white.
2. Japanese cherry blossoms come in a variety of colors, Chinese cherry blossoms are predominantly pink, while Korean cherry blossoms are mostly white.
3. As a flowering plant that blooms in the sunny spring March, cherry blossoms are incredibly beautiful, especially when in full bloom, making the entire tree appear as a colorful cloud at the horizon.

Colors of different varieties of cherry blossoms:

1. Kawazu-zakura

Among the many types of cherry blossoms, Kawazu-zakura is one, with a reddish-purple color that is quite appealing. The size of its flowers is medium.

2. Yamazakura

Yamazakura is another variety of cherry blossom. Its flowers range from white to red, with relatively small petals that look very appealing.

They generally grow in the wild, the flower’s color complimenting the bud color, giving it a very elegant temperament. This type of cherry tree has a long lifespan, with many mature trees designated as natural monuments.

3. Kanzakura

Kanzakura is another variety of cherry blossom with a light red color that looks quite vibrant. The petals are relatively larger, with many Kanzakura found in Taiwan.

4. Oshima-zakura

Oshima-zakura is another variety of cherry blossom, featuring white flowers. It mainly grows in the Izu Islands and the Boso Peninsula, and its scent is relatively mild.

5. Oyama-zakura

Oyama-zakura is found throughout Japan, excluding Kyushu and Okinawa. It is suited to cold regions, hence it is more common in Hokkaido and the northeastern regions, but also found in places like Nikko in the Kanto region.

Like Yamazakura, the underside of its leaves carry white spots, and the flower color is more intense. The flowers are large and look very beautiful. This flower is also known as “Ezo-yamazakura” or “red mountain cherry”.

What does a cherry blossom smell like?

1. Cherry blossom fragrance is very mild. How mild? So mild that if you stand under a fully bloomed cherry blossom tree, close your eyes and inhale, you’ll hardly notice a distinct smell. But if you get close and sniff the petals, there’s a very subtle scent, not exactly a fragrance, but more like a faint trace on white paper.
