The small branches are glabrous or nearly so, with only a rare presence of stellate down or soft hairs.

The leaves are leathery, nearly circular or broadly ovate, 8-15 centimeters in diameter, with a pointed tip, sometimes abruptly tapering, and a heart-shaped base. The edges are entire or have inconspicuous fine serrations.

The upper surface is green, initially with very fine stellate hairs but gradually becomes smooth and hairless, while the lower surface is densely covered with greyish-white stellate soft hairs.

The leaves have seven or nine veins; the petiole is 3-8 centimeters long; the stipules are leaf-like, oblong, about 2 centimeters long and 12 millimeters wide, with a rounded tip, and fall off early, sparsely covered with stellate soft hairs.

The inflorescence is terminal or axillary, often with several flowers arranged in a corymb. The peduncle is 4-5 centimeters long, and the pedicels are 1-3 centimeters long with a pair of bracteole at the base.

There are 7-10 small bracteoles, linear-lanceolate, covered with down, and fused at the bottom into a cup shape. The calyx is 1.5-2.5 centimeters long, fused at the base for a third to a quarter of its length, with five lanceolate lobes covered in down.

The corolla is bell-shaped, 6-7 centimeters in diameter, with yellow petals that have a dark purple base on the inside. The petals are inversely ovate, about 4.5 centimeters long, and densely covered on the outside with yellow stellate soft hairs.

The staminal column is about 3 centimeters long, smooth and hairless. The pistil branches into five, covered with fine glandular hairs.

The fruit is an ovate capsule, about 2 centimeters long, covered with down, splitting into five woody sections; the seeds are smooth and kidney-shaped.

The Coastal Hibiscus flowers from March to August.

II. Growing Environment

The Coastal Hibiscus is heliophilous and thrives in sunlight. It is robust, drought-resistant, and can tolerate poor soils. Sandy loam soil is preferred.

It has strong wind resistance and can stabilize sand dunes, making it effective for windbreaks. It also has a good salt and alkali tolerance and strong adaptability, making it suitable for coastal planting.

III. Distribution Range

The Coastal Hibiscus is found in Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Laos.

Geographically, it grows in the Philippine archipelago, Pacific islands, Southeast Asian islands, India, and Sri Lanka, among other places. In Taiwan, it is found near coastal areas across the island.

IV. Propagation and Growth

Hibiscus tiliaceus commonly reproduces through seeding and cutting propagation.

Seeding Propagation

Seed treatment and sowing involve dealing with the thick and hard seed coat of Hibiscus tiliaceus, which is not easily permeable to water.

Therefore, seed treatment is essential before sowing. Experiments have used various methods such as soaking in cold water, 50°C warm water, boiling water, and soaking in concentrated sulfuric acid followed by clean water.

The first three methods did not result in germination; only the seeds treated with concentrated sulfuric acid followed by soaking in clean water showed improved germination.

The method is as follows: Mix the seeds with concentrated sulfuric acid, clean them after 15 minutes, and then soak them in clean water for 24 hours.

After draining the water, the treated seeds can be directly sown into nutrient bags filled with substrate, placing 2 to 3 seeds in each bag.

Cover the seeds with fine soil until they are no longer visible, and after sowing, cover with a 70% shade net to retain moisture, thereby reducing the frequency of watering. Remove the shade net once the seedlings emerge and develop true leaves.

Cutting Propagation

Cutting propagation can quickly cultivate larger plants. Cut semi-lignified branches into 20 cm segments or saw branches into 1–2 meter lengths and plant them in moist garden soil. Roots should develop within 1–2 months.

[Cultivation] Young plants require attention to water replenishment, with fertilization 2–3 times from spring to summer.

Once Hibiscus tiliaceus matures, it requires minimal maintenance. Prune and shape the branches early in spring to control plant height.

For stem cuttings, select semi-woody branches from the current year, cut them into approximately ten-centimeter lengths, and insert them into the cultivation soil. Water thoroughly and cover with a shade net.

V. Main Values

Utilitarian Value

The bark fibers are used for making ropes, while the tender branches and leaves are edible as vegetables. The wood is hard and dense, with strong resistance to decay, making it suitable for construction, shipbuilding, and furniture.

In small towns along the coast of Guangzhou and Guangdong, it is also cultivated, mainly as a street tree.

Ornamental Value

Appreciated for its leaves and flowers.

The flowering season lasts all year round, peaking in the summer. It serves as a street and coastal beautification plant. Commonly found in coastal areas, it is an excellent species for preventing sand movement, moisture, and wind on the coast.

The Hibiscus tiliaceus is an evergreen shrub or tree that grows 4-10 meters tall and blooms from June to August.
