The Pineapple Flower prefers a semi-shaded environment. It grows during spring and autumn, during which it needs to be watered regularly and fertilized to ensure sufficient nutrient supply for the growth of larger leaves and flowers. The Pineapple Flower likes fertile, loose, well-drained sandy soil.

The Pineapple Flower is easy to maintain. As long as it is kept in a warm, humid environment, with light, water, fertilizer, and soil that meet its growth requirements, it will thrive.

Generally, during winter, the Pineapple Flower enters a dormant period, so watering and fertilizing should be stopped until spring.

The pineapple flower, an epiphyte, originates from the tropical rainforests of Central America. Observing from its natural habitat, most pineapple flowers prefer a semi-shaded environment and are averse to direct sunlight.

Generally, the suitable light intensity for the pineapple flower is around 18000 lux, and the relative humidity should be maintained between 68-75%. As for temperature, it should be around 22-28 degrees Celsius during the day, and ideally around 20-21 degrees Celsius at night.

The pineapple flower is very sensitive to relative humidity (RH), and under strong light or dry conditions, if the humidity is less than 50%, the leaves will curl inward or be unable to stretch.

Therefore, in high-intensity light environments, we should properly maintain the humidity above 75%. Although pineapple flowers like humid environments, during the high temperature and high humidity period in summer, insufficient ventilation can inhibit growth and attract pests, so good ventilation must be maintained.

If the air humidity under strong light is less than 65%, or the ventilation is good when it is dry, it will also cause leaf tip wilting. After the flower spike emerges, if exposed to high temperature (30 degrees Celsius), the color of the flower spike will fade and the flowering period will shorten.

The pineapple flower should be kept indoors as much as possible to maintain a cool shade. It should not be placed outdoors for exposure to the sun. When the climate is dry, water the pineapple flower in time.

During the growth period of the pineapple flower, attention should be paid to increasing the application of fertilizer. If it is a bonsai, pay attention to trimming the shape of the pineapple flower, remove some weeds, and maintain the beauty of the bonsai.

Greenhouse Planting Environment Requirements

Lighting

Since the origin of the pineapple flower is in the tropical rainforest of Central America, most pineapple flowers prefer a damp, cool environment and are averse to direct sunlight.

Light intensity can affect the growth rate, flower shape, and flower color of the pineapple flower, so controlling the light intensity of the pineapple flower is very important.

Generally, during the seedling stage of the pineapple flower, strong light will slow down the growth rate of the seedlings, and the light intensity should be around 15000 lx; three months later, the suitable light intensity is around 18000 lx.

In greenhouse cultivation, the control of light intensity is usually achieved by using an automatic shading system. In the early morning, evening, or cloudy days, natural light can be fully utilized.

During noon on sunny days, strong light can cause leaf sunburn and whiteness, affecting the quality of the pineapple flower. Therefore, a shading net can be set up in the greenhouse to flexibly adjust the light intensity.

Humidity

The growth of pineapple flowers requires relatively high humidity.

If the relative humidity is kept between 50%-75%, the leaves of the pineapple flower will be glossy and the plant will be full; if the relative humidity is below 50%, the leaves of the pineapple flower will curl inward and cannot stretch; if the relative humidity is above 75%, the initial leaves of the pineapple flower will show brown spots and the flower heart will rot later.

Generally, during the seedling stage of the pineapple flower, the relative humidity should be around 60%-70%, and three months later, the relative humidity should be around 75%.

In greenhouse cultivation, humidity control is generally achieved by using a spray system. If the air humidity in the greenhouse is too low, the pineapple flower will experience excessive plant transpiration and leaf surface drying.

A high-pressure spray system can be set up in the greenhouse. If the indoor relative humidity is low, small water mist can be sprayed into the air to increase the indoor relative humidity.

Temperature

The growth of pineapple flowers also requires high environmental temperature.

During the seedling stage of the pineapple flower, the temperature should be between 20-25 degrees Celsius, and the diurnal temperature difference should not be too large; three months later, the temperature should be between 18-28 degrees Celsius, and the diurnal temperature difference can be appropriately increased.

In addition, after the pineapple flower spike emerges, the temperature should be controlled below 30 degrees Celsius, otherwise, the color of the flower spike will fade and the flowering period will shorten.

In greenhouse cultivation, temperature control is generally achieved by using a ventilation system. Maintaining good ventilation in the greenhouse can effectively prevent the pineapple flower from being affected by pests and also helps the pineapple flower leaves to cool down in the summer.

If the summer temperature is too high, the water curtain or fan system can be turned on to cool down, preventing heart rot of the pineapple flower; if the winter temperature is too low, a heating system or thermal curtain can be installed for heating, which can prevent the pineapple flower from blooming naturally.

In addition, the process of planting pineapple flowers should take into account the light, humidity, and temperature at the same time.

If the light is strong, the relative humidity should be controlled above 75%, otherwise, the leaf tips will wilt; if the humidity and temperature are both high in summer, attention should be paid to maintaining good ventilation to avoid pest disasters.

Flowering Induction Techniques

Preparation

Ideal results from flower induction can only be achieved with proper preliminary preparation. Increasing the pineapple flower’s sensitivity to induction can be achieved through a series of preparations. Concurrently, the use of fertilizer should be high in potassium and low in nitrogen, and only watering should be done 21 days before flower induction, with fertilization stopped.

Artificial Flower Induction

During the actual artificial catalysis, accumulated water in the leaf cup must first be drained before the flower is artificially induced. The most common method of artificial flower induction is the use of acetylene saturated solution.

First, connect a water storage tank to an acetylene gas cylinder using a rubber hose; submerge a perforated rubber hose evenly in water and slowly release the acetylene gas into the water at a pressure of 0.5Pa.

The release of gas into 100L of water should take more than 40 minutes. When the water in the container has a strong smell, it is used for flower induction. Pour the acetylene solution into the drained leaf cup of the pineapple flower, filling it just right.

Repeat this process 3 times, pouring the solution every 2-3 days, and after treatment, it should bloom within 3-4 months.

Precautions

  • Firstly, choose plants that have completed their nutritional growth, i.e., each plant has developed at least 20 leaves (including dead old leaves), ensuring that the pineapple flower has accumulated sufficient nutrients to guarantee that after successful flower induction, the blooming flower can meet the standard for viewing.
  • Secondly, during flower induction, room temperature should be strictly controlled. If the room temperature is below 20℃, the flower induction is likely to fail.
  • Thirdly, only water the plant and stop fertilizing it 21 days before the artificial flower induction; fertilize the plant again 21 days after the induction is complete. To prevent the pineapple flower from producing green flower spikes, potassium fertilizer should be used primarily, and nitrogen fertilizer should be used sparingly.
  • Fourthly, ensure that the acetylene valve is fully open during flower induction, as acetylene gas typically evaporates from water easily, closing the acetylene valve will gradually reduce the concentration of acetylene in the water, affecting the flower induction effect.
  • Lastly, during the flower induction process, the container and watering tube must be thoroughly cleaned to prevent the residual solution and fertilizer from affecting the flower induction effect.

VI. Reproduction Method

Cultivation Substrate

The growth cycle of a bromeliad from seedling to mature plant typically takes 2 to 3 years, and the type of cultivation substrate used can directly affect the growth rate and quality of the bromeliad. Therefore, before cultivation, the primary task is to ensure the quality of the substrate.

Bromeliads are epiphytic plants, so their root systems provide the main support. Since root growth requires abundant air, the substrate chosen for cultivation should have good drainage and ventilation.

In addition, since bromeliads take a long time to grow, another requirement for the substrate is slow decomposition. Generally, a mixture of 60% to 70% large particles (coarse peat, bark) and 30% to 40% small particles (perlite, grass peat) is used.

During the mixing process, a 1% formaldehyde solution is sprayed for sterilization. After mixing, the substrate is sealed with plastic film, which helps the formaldehyde more effectively kill pests and weed seeds.

After 15 days, the film is removed and the substrate is spread out for about 7 days. It can be used once the residual formaldehyde has evaporated.

Additionally, there should not be too much dust in the substrate as it can clog the bottom of the pot and hinder drainage. Also, since bromeliads prefer acidic substrates, the pH of the substrate should be kept between 5.5 and 6.5.

Potting

Prior to potting, various sterilization steps are necessary. 15 days before potting, the greenhouse site should be cleaned, and the greenhouse should be fumigated with a 1% formaldehyde solution.

The greenhouse floor should be disinfected with lime water, and flower pots and cultivation tools should be sterilized with a potassium permanganate solution.

When planting, dig a 2 to 3 cm deep hole in the center of the pot, place the seedling vertically in the center, and lightly press the substrate to ensure the seedling stands firmly.

During planting, care should be taken to plant at the right depth to avoid impeding the growth of the seedling, and the substrate should be compacted moderately to avoid reducing its aeration, which would affect root growth. After planting, water should be immediately applied to establish the roots.

The substrate should be thoroughly soaked until a small amount of water seeps through the clenched fist. This ensures a good bond between the plant’s root system and the substrate. Afterwards, an 80% tobramycin solution is sprayed for disease prevention.

Water and Nutrient Management

Water Quality: The quality of water is crucial for the successful cultivation of bromeliads. The success of bromeliad cultivation largely depends on the water quality. Generally, the lower the salt content of the water, the better.

Tap water or well water in some places may contain a significant amount of salt and must be analyzed before use. Bromeliad experts suggest using rainwater or reverse osmosis water to ensure that the water does not contain excessive amounts of sulfur, chlorine, boron, and other elements.

The EC and pH values of the water should be measured before each irrigation.

Nutrition: The three elements of fertilizer, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), are essential for the growth of bromeliads. Generally, compound fertilizers are described by their N:P2O5:K2O ratios.

Nitrogen promotes leaf elongation and deep green color, phosphorus aids in plant transport, and potassium shortens and widens the leaves. Bromeliads prefer potassium, and the appropriate use of potassium fertilizer can shorten and widen the leaves, improving the quality of the bromeliad leaves.

Bromeliads are very sensitive to boron (B) and even minute amounts in the substrate or irrigation water can cause leaf burn. Also, high nitrogen fertilization can lead to plant aging.

Fertilizer Application: When applying fertilizer, the water-soluble fertilizer should be kept less than 1.2mS/cm. After fertilizing, the leaves should be sprayed with water (irrigation water: 0.1EC) to rinse off the fertilizer, otherwise it can easily cause leaf burn.

During winter cultivation, the EC (electrical conductivity of the medium) should be kept low. During the fast growth period in summer, the EC should be increased because the plant requires more nutrients at this time.

Managing Propagation

Ornamental pineapples are very easy to maintain. They thrive in high temperatures, humidity, and semi-shade. They can be kept indoors all year round in a warm and bright environment.

In winter, they can be exposed to sunlight all day, in spring and autumn they need light in the morning and evening, and in summer direct sunlight should be avoided. Bright light enhances the vibrant color of the leaves.

The ideal winter temperature is no lower than 10°C, and anything above 20°C is not conducive for the plant’s dormancy, which can affect its growth and flowering in the following year.

From late spring to autumn, during the growing period, increase the watering appropriately. Some clean water can also be poured into the leaf sheaths, which should be changed every two weeks to prevent the water from getting stale and smelly.

Regularly spray water on the leaves. In winter, the soil should be somewhat dry, but not too dry. From May to September, apply nitrogen fertilizer once a week and increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizers appropriately before flowering to promote large and brightly colored flowers.

During flowering, do not water the sheaths and keep the plant out of direct sunlight to prolong the flowering period. After flowering, the plant enters a dormant period. The flower stalk should be cut off to reduce the consumption of nutrients. Do not water the sheaths in winter.

  • Soil: River sand mixed with fine sawdust or commercially available potting soil can be used. The ideal soil for pineapple planting is a mixture of loose peat soil, humus soil, and tree fern debris.
  • Moisture: Pineapple flowers don’t require special care. In autumn and winter, they can be watered once every 7-10 days. When watering, allow the water to accumulate in the central leaf sheaths. If the water is not absorbed after a week, it should be poured out and replaced with fresh water to avoid the growth of bacteria.
  • Sunlight: Pineapple flowers generally prefer sunlight, but should not be exposed to strong light as it can damage the leaves. They can grow well indoors. When the temperature drops below 10°C, it is best to move them indoors.
  • Fertilizer: They grow slowly, so it is best to mix slow-release fertilizer into the medium after transplanting or planting, or spray the leaves or pour a very diluted liquid fertilizer into the leaf sheaths every month.
  • Potting Conditions: The root system of ornamental pineapples is not very developed and some roots even prefer air contact. Therefore, they grow better in small, shallow pots than in large, deep ones. The potting soil should ideally be leaf mold with a little garden soil, or a half and half mix of peat and perlite.

After blooming, the central leaf cluster dies and the side shoots continue to grow. When these shoots are about 15 cm tall, they can be removed along with their roots from the mother plant and replanted. This method only allows for “single propagation” and the number of propagations is limited.

Therefore, it is best to cut small tubers that have grown from the mother tuber during spring repotting and root them, or divide young shoots that have sprouted from the root of the old plant. Both methods require shading and maintaining humidity and temperature.

When the roots grow to 2-3 cm, they can be planted. If cultivated properly, a mother pearl can propagate about 10 plants a year.

Bromeliad plants should be placed in a semi-shady and well-ventilated area for daily care, with scattered light for growth. Strong light can scorch the leaves and cause spots.

However, it should not be kept in a too shady place for a long time, as this can fade the beautiful leaf color, leading to a loss of aesthetic appeal.

In dry, hot, and low humidity conditions, the edges and tips of pineapple leaves can easily burn, so it is necessary to keep the potting soil moist and spray clean water on the leaves 1 to 2 times a day.

The central cup-shaped part of the leaf seat can be filled with clean water. Bromeliads were originally parasitic plants with underdeveloped root systems, consisting only of small and short roots.

Therefore, avoid applying too much fertilizer to prevent root rot and leaf yellowing, and apply diluted fertilizer water instead.

The leaf axils at the base of ornamental pineapples continuously grow small buds. When they grow 5 or 6 leaves, they can be cut and propagated. They should be able to grow roots in about a month.

VII. Disease Prevention and Control

Disease

In a greenhouse environment, pineapple flowers are less prone to disease when conditions are ideal. However, when grown in high heat and humidity, poor drainage, or when seedlings are overstocked before transplantation, the pineapple flowers are susceptible to heart rot and root rot.

Symptoms of heart rot include rotting and browning of the tender leaves in the heart of the plant, which detach easily when touched. Root rot manifests as partial or total rotting and darkening of the root system, impeding development.

After infection, the plant’s ability to absorb nutrients and water is severely impacted, slowing growth significantly.

Prevention methods: Firstly, avoid high heat and humidity in the growth environment, choose substrates with good drainage, and ensure good ventilation. Secondly, when diseased plants are identified, timely isolation and treatment are required.

If the disease is severe, the infected plants must be removed and destroyed promptly. Lastly, when transplanting seedlings, disinfect them by soaking in a solution of 50% carbendazim at 800 times dilution, and plant them after they dry.

During the growth period of pineapple flowers, use a solution of 75% Mancozeb and zinc at 800-1000 times dilution to irrigate the heart of the plant 2-3 times for pest and disease control.

During reproductive growth, irrigate the heart of the plant monthly with 80% Metam-sodium at 300 times dilution, and repeat this 3 times.

Pests

If greenhouse-grown, pineapple flowers are susceptible to scale insects and red spider mites if ventilation is poor.

Scale insects, mainly brown and yellow varieties, are 1-3cm long and attach to the underside of pineapple flower leaves to suck sap.

They are oval or elliptical, and their young are highly mobile, hiding on the underside of old leaves at the base of the plant and gradually moving up to the tender leaves to suck sap, causing yellow-brown spots on the leaves, and in severe cases, blackening and wilting of the plant.

Scale insect prevention: Firstly, maintain suitable temperature and humidity in the greenhouse, good ventilation, and reasonable spacing between plants. Secondly, at the initial stage of pest infestation, maintain suitable temperature and humidity, good ventilation, and reasonable plant row spacing in the pineapple flower planting environment.

At the initial stage of plant damage, use Acaricide at 1000-1500 times dilution or Oxidize at 800-1000 times dilution to spray the underside of leaves, repeating every 7-8 days, 3-4 times in total.

Red spider mites often hide on the underside of pineapple flower leaves to suck sap, causing the underside of the leaves to develop red spots, severe cases lead to leaf yellowing and wilting, loss of luster, and eventual death.

Red spider mite prevention: Firstly, maintain suitable temperature and humidity in the greenhouse, good ventilation, and reasonable spacing between plants.

Secondly, use Trichlorfon at 1500 times dilution or Fenpropathrin at 1000 times dilution to spray the underside of leaves, repeating every 15 days for pest control, 2-3 times in total for effective control.
